I'm sure it's an indo-pacific tarpon, not the atlantic tarpon. They still get pretty damn big, but nowhere near as big as the species pictured above.

I was browsing the cichlid tanks and had to ask what the 8" silver future-monster in the lower row was. Looked to me like a wee baby even at 8". It was a f'ing tarpon. I asked the guy WTF they were doing selling fish like that, and they got on accident (stow-away in an order, I guess). So my LFS has a tarpon. Only 8" and it really looks like it's a baby, just like a new-born guppy-fry looks like a baby. Holy crap, if I only had a very very large private lake.

Most probably it is an Indo Tarpon which in the aquaria seldom top 24". The picture of the huge one the fisherman is holding is an Atlantic-saltwater variety which gets like you said huge. I have three Indo's in my 240 and they are a very nice fish to have.
