Picked up my first Pike Cichlids today. Does anybody know the exact ID or have any info. They were labeled as Rainbow Pike at the LFS. The color is what sold me. About 4-5 inches right now.

Whoa!!! When I read the title i thought it was gonna be about Crenicichla johanna, but those are def. not johanna. Who is the supplier for that LFS? Is it Rapps? Did you get both of those? How much were they? Bottom one is a female...;), top one might be as well..can't see the dorsal though. Can you get better pictures for more accurate ID?

Hahaha, you started off on the right foot bro....def. got you one of the more attractive and desireable pike species....;)

Thanks, There was 5 of them I just grabbed the 2 biggest. Not sure about the sex. I'll take some pics with a real camera this time. Those were taken with my phone. My LFS wasn't sure of the exact ID. The suppliers brings in weird cichlids once a month. But so far I love their color..

kind of looks like Tapajos Red

Tapajos Red, Red Faced Lugubris, Lugbris variant...can't really tell from the picture. Bottom one is DEF. a female though...;)
Is it the white stripe in the finnage or the pinkish belly that has you saying female? I seen these at my LFS before but they were called Red Pike. lol (these names kill me:swear: )

Gotta get a close look at them. A lot of pikes look the same if you don't know what you are lookin for. Johanna is commonly sold as red pike, or rainbow pike, which is why i thought these would be johanna before i opened it.

In almost all the Lugubris species the female will get a white stripe in the dorsal, like you thought. Males won't have it. In Saxatilis and I THINK in Reticulatus the females will have one to several spots in the dorsal fin. Dwarfs also have the spot in the dorsal. Key thing to look for when sexing pikes is the dorsal...;) .

PP you are the pike master!! :woot:
