WHY THE ATTRACTION TO AROWANA? tell your story

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My interest for aros is from my first time ever hearing about them, I was in 6th or 7th grade and I had a friend at school from Vietnam , We used to talk about collecting basketball/baseball cards and he was telling me about these fish his dad has, he said they were called Arowanas. I thought the name sounded cool like Marijuana or arrow like a bow and arrow so I asked more questions he drew me a picture of a fish with a bulldog mouth and a moustache. I thought I had to check them out for myself, telling me that they were illegal also raised my interest, so we went to his place after school and he showed me these 4 big fish each in their own huge tanks he called GOLDEN aros, they were awesome but I never realized what they really were until many years later, so my first glimpse was of some beautiful red/golden aros and I didnt even care at the time! Ever since then I've been hooked on the size look and graceful swimming of Arowanas!

I like em cuz there awesome predators and theyre pretty cool looking!!!

My childhood LFS always had one.

So ive been hooked ever since.

My aro ended up being put in my tank by a friend. Then I had to move into the middle of the remote high mountains in the middle of winter. Of course, What went with me fit in my Toyota 4x4, animals all in the cab including 5 cats and my silver and his pals in a rubbermaid tote. We followed ten snowplows through a blizzard but my Aro has the heart of a Lion. He took it like a champ. I watch my aquarium not my TV.

Aro's have been around a lot longer than we have. They are so free spirited, not tameable, not controllable, but graciously recieve all that we do to care for them. Mine has provided my with friendship, he plays with me, he has a whole bag of tricks to get in trouble, he's a HAM by choice. He isn't a trained circus animal. He is a wild, free creature that I wish could be still wild, but that isn't an option.

I try to recreate to biggest, best, most fascinating habitat for him. I want to see if the tanks are big enough, and I do all I can, him to grow huge and feel as free as he can in captivity. I'm going for the biggest monster aro ever. He is so beautiful, it just looks like liquid platinum when he moves. His grace then suddenly the unleashed power inside of him will show it's side and it's fascinating. Generally, only very domesticated animals are legal.

This is a glimpse into a world that is unknown to so many people. My tank is set up for show, it commands the center of all attention in true feng shui fashion. But that isn't why people walk into my house and just stop and stare, and are mesmerized. My aro does that all on his own. I woke up at 3 am the other night and a friend who had stayed the night on the couch due to party overload, was sitting on the floor, 2 ft from my Aquarium just staring, for over and hour. Captivated.

I have a passion for these creatures because they deserve it. They have survived and evolved. come on! Why can something with no opposing thumbs strike it so well with humans????And I have so much $$$$$ into the beast that I have no choice!!

It relaxes me when I'm tense and tired. I could spend hours in front of my tank watching them swim gracefully accross the tank. Feeding them and chancing water is the other enjoyment i experience. Fun and easy fish to keep. No doubt about it. :headbang2

The first time I saw a silver aro, I knew that I had to get one. When my finances did not allow me to get one a few years back, I spend most of my time hopping from one lfs to another just to watch how graceful, proud and powerful this fishes swim. Arowanas have a class entirely of their own. I like other fishes but arowanas will forever top my list. I have had several arowana deaths already but it has never stopped me from getting a new one. The most arowanas I have ever owned at one time was three, an RTG, A jardini and a green. Now I'm down to own but Im still very happy with him. I believe in the luck it brings and always, at the end of a tiring day, I look forward to going home just to spend hours infront of her. Cheesy but true.

umm... well...i just love everything bout them.. there temprement, agility, looks and attitude!! all round great fish!

One of two fish to complete my personal list of Americans.. :)
