My son came home from Wal-Mart yesterday with what is called a Sydontis catfish,it is a brownish color,it has a very high back fin and eats like a pig!!!The guy at the store told my son it will only grow to 5 inches(but who knows??)Anybody know what this cat might be(and any info is appreciated)thank you.(sorry no digi-cam)

That would be my best guess as well but i've seen a few other species i haven ID'd yet coming in this time of year. If i had to go with a sight unseen bet thats the species i'd go with. I'd just hit up www.planetcatfish.com for the info on it.

They are a great looking species and will most likely get larger than five inches depending on feeding and water change schedule. They hold there own with most fish well enough.

synodontis eupterus was my guess too from the hi fin comment.Thier coloring changes as they grow, and watch out for that dorsal its pointy

I just bought a eupterus Sat. by mistake. It was mislabeled. I didn't know this until I brought it home and started researching. Oh well, it's still kind of cool. Doesn't swim out in the open much, or hang out at the bottom though. Hangs out upside down in the plants mostly. I really wanted a bottom feeder to clean up scraps of uneaten food.

When the light goes out he should go the bottom and start cleaning up all the food that he can find. Mine is like a little vacuum cleaner.

Mine was very shy until he got about 5" (he is closer to 7" now), then he decided he was going to try and be the boss of my tank. It is quite fun to watch him chase my pleco and convicts around the tank.
