What gar/gars can I keep in an unheated pond in Southern Michigan? I know there is at least one because I have seen fishing pictures of them from Michigan. Oh yea and what dimensions for a pond do you think would be good for this species? Thanks

Chad

Not sure which would be able to take the cold nights? Are you going to leave it out there for the winter?

Yea most likely. I really don't want to run two ponds cuz I can't afford a tank big enough to hold on even for the winter.

Longnose gar are caught in every county of Michigan, expect them up to 42" or so there and that means a minimum pond size of 12'x16' and it should be at least 4' deep, you will need a bubbler or floating deicer to keep a small area ice free during the winter. There are 2 small populations of spotted gar in your state but they are protected and endangered.

I could just go to the store and buy a spotted gar can't I? I was also thinking of some bowfin. Do you think they could live in harmony? Oh yea and at the Toledo Zoo they have a coldwater tank with chiller and all with walleye and alligator gars, longnose and others. Is it possible that any gar can handle the temps?

i dont know the proper name for them but we call them alligator gar in northern indiana. they are pretty common but get pretty big. i agree with guppy on a area at least 4 foot otherwise you'll have gar cicles

I am keeping a bubble and probably a deicer on it through out the winter. I am now thinkin af forgeting the whole gar idea though and going with LMB and Bowfin with my 5 bluegill.

LOL GAR CICLES!!! I love it

I had gas for a while (alligator) If ya get um from the pet store they are prolly aclimated for a tropical fish tank not a pond.. unless ya find some that are for ponds i guess... but be careful not to stress um too much.. from pet store at 70+ degrees to outside pond temps :WHOA:
