bad for who? the fish or the human? i doubt it'll pose any danger to either one though. you'll probably have to be exposed to high concentration of the stuff for long periods of time before you or your fish might develop cancer. i'm not even sure fish can get cancer. i'm not even sure scientists know the real cause of cancer cause if they did they would have found a cure by now lol.

main reason you shouldn't use the melafix is because bacteria grow resistant overtime to these meds.

Over use now with small cases will leave later cases of infection harder to cure.

Especially within its own tank system.


The fins will most definately grow back fine..

if it can cause cancer to humans, yea its bad (if you use it everytime a fish gets damaged).

clean water, good varied diet with quality nutrition, (maybe alittle salt).

thats all you need, meds should be your last option, not your first.

I don't even consider melafix or pimafix a med, its so light. It says on the back of the label it has an ingredient "known to the state of california to cause cancer and birth defects".

Honestly, everything causes cancer, we're all going to get it, the amounts in melafix are probably so minute it makes no difference. Breathing our air probably has more carcinogens than dosing with melafix.

But, hey, melafix or pimafix is not necessary. Bichirs heal amazingly, clean water should be fine, either way will be ok

Melafix-pimafix are alright preventatives and if you just have to fuss its better to use it than more potent antibiotics.Personaly I don't use it a good varied diet,clean water and time is all thats needed fins heal well on thier own-Anne

As for the Cancer issue who knows what dosage CA was using in their testing.Remember tests can be skewed to get damn near any result you want.The media can manipulate numbers also.I remember reading that some sweetner caused cancer in rats.The dosage was equal to either of us drinking gallons of the sweetner daily and for weeks at a time.The sad truth is before we expire we are likely to have some fom of cancer from what who knows-Anne
