I was looking to get a few pikes from Rapps but can't decide which ones. I saw the punctata in the TFH article and they are cool, but I haven't seen them in person. Are they still that pretty? Or is it worth the extra 25-50 dollars to get either the Atabapo or Tapajos?

Sorry for the long post and thanks in Advance for the help! :)

Depending on tank size, and ability to deal with aggression e.g other tanks, if you have the space, PP will prolly say get the pair of atabapos, or tapas.. I recently just got a johanna, my first, and it is extremely awesome. So I reccomend doing pikes. I guess the sax ones are the easiest in their care, and breeding. Being your first, you might not want to go with something real expensive. Or that you won't be happy with. In the end, it is all up to you. And if you think that was a long post.................

How many are you wanting to get? You said a few pikes. If you are gonna get a few pikes, I suggest no less than THREE. Pikes are pretty conspecific, in other words they will fight a lot with each other. The more pikes you have the less aggression will be shown to just one pike. You didn't say which size tank you were wanting to put them in either. Most of those pikes would be able to go in a 40 to 50gal tank as a temp. because they are so small. The tapajos and 'atabapo' though shouldn't be in anything less than a 75gal right now. As they mature, 90% of those pikes on his site will need to be housed in a 125gal or larger. Bigger is always better!!!

The punctata are pretty kewl pikes. They aren't that common, so that adds a factor to their appeal. Top that off with being beautiful as adults and they are top notch. The juv. aren't gonna show the intense coloring of the adults, but be patient...they'll get there. How ever, being your first pikes assumably, I wouldn't spend a whole lotta money until your sure you like them. Crenicichla vittata and Crenicichla strigata are both great lookin pikes, cheaper, and both currently instock on Rapps site...;). You could easily get 4 of each pike and it would be the same price as if you got one of the tapajos or atabapo...;). Just a thought! Either way, all of those pikes on there are pimpin! I would love to own any of them right now...;)

I have a 125 for the pikes. I wanted to get three so eventually I would get a pair. The thing with the pikes is that I would rather get the punctata then get some others, find out I like them and be pissed off when Rapps doesn't have any more. Do you know a website I could see any pics of the punctata?
