At what Humidity % does Mold become a threat?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's black mold spores and fungi spores. So, part of the reclamation filtration needs to filter down to 5 microns or less.

Yeah, I've noticed mold spores would form in the collection bucket when I was manually dumping it on a daily basis. However, in the previous fish room we had done the above re-circulation process with no faults (no copper coils, obviously..) and the black molds spores failed to formulate when the water was consistantly flowed through the collection bucket. Perhaps the standing water (from when the collection bucket would become full, and the unit would shut off.) is a more viable environment for the spores?

I am not nearly as scientifically versed as you, do you have any links so I can read up about 'microns'.. ?

dont mean to hijack but for some reason i get mold growing on my window pan and sill, is there a way to find out what it is? and why would it only be on the a window i thought mold grew in dark places?

I'll have to surf for sites after I get home. In the meantime; a micron is 1/1,000.000 of a meter or 1/250,000 of an inch. For example; the largest human cell is an egg at 200-250 microns. The average bacteria is 1/100 the size of a human cell. And, a virus can be 1/100 the size of a bacteria. (Man, that's dragging up some old school memories)

Filters are sold by either the smallest size they'll filter out or by mesh size. For mesh size-rated filters, you'll need another conversion chart for micron size to mesh rating.

Mold prefers dark places but, they'll also shoot for a good environment. Glass has a faster temp variation than wood, plasterboard, etc. The faster temp variant allows water vapor to condense. These areas of condensation make a perfect lake for molds to thrive in.

Are mold spores bad for fish? Will black mold sprout(?) and grow in an aquatic environment? If you have mold aren't the spores already in the aquarium via aeration?

You want to keep mold down more for yourself than for the fish. Germinating molds use up O2 and nutrients that you want available for your fish's use. But, airborn spores can cause respiratory infections in people, damage construction materials, and harbor other fungi, molds, bacteria, and viruses.
