what we need to do is sort a date out then see what the weather is like and work it out round that if its still nice we can go carping if its a bit over cast and wet pikefishing it is how that?

I hear that it all depends on the weather this is what i found out !

July - September. High water and air temperatures force big pike into deep water where they rest for long periods, feeding spells are often short around first and last light, windy overcast conditions can be enough to perk sport up. Night fishing with surface lures or bucktails can be extremely successful but you must be very organised! If you can go afloat to reach deep water now is the time to do it, fishing around weirs or places where incoming "cooler" water enters the river will greatly improve your chances. During this period fast moving baits that have erratic actions and change depth frequently are perfect for searching out feeding pike, crashing deep diving plugs into the bottom is a useful tactic that can also provoke action. This period requires a diverse selection of Lures and lure Styles, you must have to have a bit of "imagination" when using them. Jerkbaits in all densities are essential, Bull Dawgs and Ugly Joe's and big offset Spinnerbaits are the preferred choices, but don't feel limited to these.

Dan There is quite a bit to learn in pike fishing. If you want to fish 2 rods first of all you said you want to lure fish the second. There are two problems here firstly a lot of day ticket lakes don’t like lure fishing. Secondly you don’t want to be beating the water in front of you to foam while trying to fish it with your second rod. Also with lure fishing it’s a case of searching the water you need to move about (be a roving angler) fishing high and low in the water working out where the fish are held up. In the winter months they tend to hold up with the silver fish. When I fish still waters (lakes) I tend to fish dead baits and sit behind alarms. The other thing have you spooled up your new reel with line yet? If not hang fire get braid for it don’t use mono I, personally, never use any braided line under 50lb breaking strain. Playing fish on braid is a much more direct experience also when you strike there is no stretch. Braid also floats and when some of your lures cost £10 you always get them back. The “Bull Dawgs” you mentioned are brilliant lures but they are huge and you need a really tough rod to cast them I would only use a lure like this when fishing a huge reservoir. As for Lures I have 100’s of them I think the Lures catch more anglers than pike. Have a look at

All the fox lures are good. Also what rod have you got with the reel? You need a different type for a multiplier as the reel sits on top un like a fix spool it sits underneath also lure rods tend to be shorter. I can talk about it all day if you want to learn all about it there is a good magazine called pike and predator get a copy will help you right out.

My new reel says the ideal line weight is 10 to 12lb i was gonna put on a 15lb but only less of it, i appreciate all your advice so if you think i'm doing something wrong please tell me i'm keane to learn ! this would be my first time piking and if i don't ask i'll screw up ... lol

I did a few matches; my son is the match fisherman. I wend down the rd of the dark side as one of my match fishing buds said I like my big fish to much. My son made the local paper last week came second in a local match but had the most fish but not the top weight beaten by a 1lb. He is 10 and has a 5lb chub a 20 lb carp a 2lb roach a 3 lb perch I wish I had the places to fish he has when I was his age.




I might have mentioned it before other than my family my 2 loves in life are fish keeping and fishing I am extremely fortunate that 2 of my closes friends own a LFS and a fishing tackle shop.

I just bought MAXIMA CHAMELEON FISHING LINE 100m SPOOL 15LB you think it's any good for what i need ?

Dam makes quite good rods so you are ok there. The thing with braid is it is a fraction of the thickness of monno when all the top anglers now are going over to it for lure fishing.


Braid has these advantages:
 Three to four times stronger than equivalent diameter mono – means you can load more line on your spool, your line is less detectable in the water, and your lure will swim deeper
 Virtually no stretch means superb striking power and great sensitivity – you can set hooks more surely and feel every move your lure makes
 Very limp – virtually no memory


Mono has these advantages:
 Less expensive than braid
 Absorbs shock well – which can be an issue with some wild jumping game fish how many Tarpon can you get in Essex.


You must back it with 2m of monno as it can tighten up and explode plastic spools if yours in mettle not a problem.

MAXIMA CHAMELEON is a good line but I haven’t used it for years because I have other preferences having tried virtually every on the market. My fave at the moment for carp is krystonite it looks good and I have put it through its paces this catfish was pulled out of some snags on it. For France once again would use braid at long range those carp in the other link were caught at over 200 yards you need the braid to set the hook at that range because of the stretch in Monno.


THE 1 PROBLEM WITH BRAID IT IS NOT ALLOWED AT SOME LAKES IN THE UK.

and you can pull hooks if to rough
