I have the stuff all over the rocks, light patches of both the red and green starting on the glass. I have a baby common pleco, a syndontis euryptus, and a spathodus that supposedly loves to graze on algae, but they just are not getting the job done. i really don't want to have to use any chemical crap to get rid of it. any suggestions?

Cut down on your lighting, the amount of time your leave your light on and/or up the water changes.
I don't see anything wrong with algae personally. It's found in every natural habitat where cichlids are found. Don't expect the fish to do the job for you. They can live with the algae just fine.

but if you realy do want it gone try covering your tank and leaving the light off. do a pwc every three days it should clear up.
how old are your light bulbs??
sometimes algae appears because the intensity of the bulbs has gone down
It doesn't bother me so much on the rocks and what not, it's more the stuff on the glass that's a pisser, because it shows up so often
Ther might be something a miss. If you're overfeeding or not performing waterchanges very often you should work those out.
Algae develops when there is enough lighting and nutrients for it to thrive. It gets out of control when there's is an overabundance of nutrients and/or lighting. Cut down on one or the other, or both, and you'll see a dent/stop in it's rapid growth.

Depending on what Tangs you have will result in a different answer regarding the algae. Som,e of the fish eat that stuff as their staple diet in the lake and this means you should not go treating with a chemical. I try to promote algae growth, especially on my rocks, for my mbuna. Have a fuelleborni female that is constantly grazing from the rocks. Healthiest food for them. Same applies to certain tangs. I would suggest you get a magnet cleaner and scrap the glass. Regular water changes will also help. Previous advice is sound advice to follow.
if you dont want the alage there is a very simple solution to your problem....
Clean the alage out of the tank, do weekly water changes (for a month then do bi weekly if the alage hasnt come back), keep away from windows and dont turn the light on so much ~_^ I had the same problem.
