Hey
I havent been on here for a while and geez its changed!
But anyway, i have had my Jardini for about 7 months now (i made a topic when i got him, so cute)
He's grown to be almost 10" now, and still in the 4"x18"x20" tank, which by calculations is still big enough right?

The thing is, he doesnt eat much fresh fish, like, i used to feed him Hikari Gold every day but i have recently made the change to feeding him whitebait every day. When he eats them he will eat 3 or 4 a day, but after that feeding he wont eat for another 2 days....
When i used to feed him hikari gold, he'd eat about 18 of the medium pellets per day. And he would come up to the front of the tank every morning for a feed.
Not with the whitebait though, is it harder to digest so he isnt hungry in the mornings?

Second Q, i bought 2 silver dollars for him becasue he always used to get spooked by me, this is when my tank had plants and plecos and it was beautiful, it worked for a while and he had personality, he liked coming around the fornt of the tank.
Now he has grown a bit and he beats the %$*@ out of the dollars, and they have eaten all the plants and the plecos are dead. The dollars hide now and becsaue they dont move much. Now that they hide all the time, he gets scared by me, and darts from one side to the other side and im afraid he'll hurt himself.

Whats the best way to get my Jar to stop hiding?
Im guessing remove the dollard and get LOTS of plants, BIG logs too
somewhere he can hide, lots of greenery? bogs etc

Any suggestions would be helpful
i wont show any pics of my tank as it is looking RALLY miserable atm, i am ashamed.

You could use plastic plants, just dont put them into the gravel, let them float, or live anacharis, milfoil, or lily pads

I think you may need a bigger tank mate.

That is common behaviour of an aro that feels cramped. Particulary jardini...they get very jumpy.

i agree. but i have to admit i have no experience regarding this since my jars have never acted that way at all

What steve said. I had a jardini that was nervous and jumpy in a small tank and tried to jup out, then when transferred to a 180 was a a different fish. Much calmer and more confident, and not nervous.

In my exp. - aros don't need cover or hiding places, simply enough space.

I agree that space has alot to do with it. My aro gained quite a reputation for his adolescent antics, but yours is still young. Is he wild caught? Mine also liked to hang out in floating plants. I used a weighted bubble wand in one side, he'd swim in that and play with the bubbles. I stronly suggest ebay-arowanas-almond tree leaves. They calm the fish, add tanin, reduce stress, increase their desire to do the wild thing, in general, at that age, the almond tree leaves made all the difference. I also think spending a lot of time with it will make it more comfortable.

With lighting, my aro freaked if the room lights were brighter than his tank, don't know why........

Might also try changing his tank (arrangement not just water)occassionally, fish get bored too. Mine loved the interaction, see if he comes around put don't push him if he's afraid.
Best of luck
Mei

yeah man bigger tank, small tanks make jardini's go very skittish!! in the time being i would just put more cover in for him...have floating plants, they love them
