I've had a pair of convicts in my big tank for a few months now and not one batch of fry yet!!! I am thinking the tank is too big or something... It really makes me mad that they dont breed!!
I ended up picking up a few more convicts... one of the pairs spawned, but somebody robbed the cradle and munched up all the eggs. Then he left her at the alter and got with the new girl I brought home... they spawned a few days later. She decided he was a crappy parent and banished him to the corner of the tank with everyone else and took on parenting alone. It was a little too hard for her to defend them by herself, and she lost about 75% of her eggs to the cradle robber... I cleared the other fish and left her with her eggs to go about her business. 16 of the 18 eggs left hatched today... I'm having so much fun watching her group them up and ... then group them up again... and again. The other convicts are helping me finish cycle a 55... three itty bitty fish in that big tank... they're having a blast. Maybe I'll get some more eggs outta the bad daddy lol
dont mean to hijack your thread Keeper of The Ropes, but my cons just have had free swimming fry for about a week and I tried to gravel vac them out but it didnt work. What should I do to try to get them out?
I usually sprinkle a little food on top and when they come up to eat I just net them out. The fry usually don't even try to run. I usually get about 20 at a time out this way.
My cons usually go at it once every 3 weeks.. like clockwork.
I usually net the fry if I'm trying to save them. If you leave them in for 2-3 weeks, they are plenty big enough to net easily. Then as soon as they are gone, the parents are at it again
I have heard the idea of rotating the parents instead of the fry. If you keep two (or three.. or..) tanks set up... have the parents breed in one, then once the fry are free swimming move the parents to the second tank. They will being to spawn again and you will not have to worry about catching the small fry until they are big enough to be fed.
you might try keeping two or three females per male. if he wants to breed again and she just wants to protect the eggs, hell kill her. i had this problem a couple times.
also mine werent breeding for a month or so and i read that if they have no territory they wont breed and to introduce a predator that they could defend a territory against and breed. i dropped a synodontis longiritus (sp) in the tank and they bred within the week. then i pulled him out and i had no more problems for a while. until the male killed the female like i said before :-x
