as all of you guys know im currently building a pond to house some arapaimas. i have a few question where i tried asking in the pond forum but didnt get any feed back so maybe ill try it out here. by the way i down sized the pond a little bit to make some room for my filter, heater etc etc. L-40ft x W-15ft x D-3ft.

-what do you guys think would be the best material to use in such a massive pond? rubber liner or concrete? by the way i live in Richmond BC so we're somewhat even with the sea level at times but then again some houses here in Richmond do have swimming pool so i dont think its does matter
-if i do use rubber liner, how do you do the insulation to prevent heat loss under ground? do you put styros between the earth and the rubber liner?
-is there any other more efficent and cost friendly way to heat the pond up aside from what i was thinking of using (pool heater)
-is it true when you have plants in the pond you dont have to do water change as often?
-i was thinking of filling the bottom part with river rocks to hide my floor filters would that not be a good idea if im using rubber liner?
-i was thining of using sand filters as well, how do you clean the filter on these things? or do you even clean these things out or do you just change the sand every so often? i heard about bead filters too, does that work better than sand filter?
-would one UV60 http://www.aquaticeco.com/index.cfm/.../8998/cid/2204 be enough for this pond?

im open to suggestions or any other comments that would help me in this project

i would say concrete you could plumb the pipes right into the cement coming out whereever you want when your pouring it...im not really sure on the rest..a pool heater would prob work

3 feet depth wun be enough for the arapaima in the long run. I suggest going for a 5 feet depth.
 
do not put river rocks in the botom if ur using linner,u can get 100x100 rolls of linner for pretty cheap like 500$...a pool heater would be the best and cheapest way to go a pond heater that big would be 2500 dollar range.for not letting heat to escape through the bottom put underlament below the linner or old carpet it also pertects the linner... good luck,and post some pics of the fish
