Hand feeding, what a great feeling!

I don't hand feed my aros. specially when they are already big , even if you were just bitten accidentally, it'll really hurt. they have teeth that tear thru skin

That's great. Must teach my two arowana the same! If you want better color for your arowana try offering them spirulina pellets. I feed them with it to everyday and only give them lifefood every two days. Their true color really comes out!

But you need to soften the pellets first before feeding them. They love the spirulina.

I just got nipped at by one of the monster in my com tank. Bleed immediately ut it's not really that painful.

one time my jardini got the prawn and my finger too. he took "hand feeding" literally....

I did it too, but hand feeding does tend to make the fish associate your hands with food and teaching them to bite at fingers. I stopped "handing" the food to my aro when he got bigger, I just tossed the hikari hard onto the water, he's jump and strike it, it's cool when they do it, but be careful. Anyone have a worthy pic of an aro bite? I wanna see!

I used to hand feed my oscars. Then i started to hold the pellets about 4 inches above the water and they would jump up and get it. It was pretty cool and everyone liked to watch. Well eventually everytime i would open the lid he thought i was going to feed him. He would jump out of the water. Well twice he jumped out when i open the lid to clean the tank. So i quit that. But it was fun while it lasted.

I just read your thread and thought it would be cool to try it out. It took a long time but he finally swam over really slow and sort of nipped at it. He got scared and swam away and then came back again cause I guess he was that hungry! LOL! But after that he wouldnt do it. Maybe he thought I was gonna try and catch him or something. Maybe if I try some more later. But I dont know if I would wanna do it when he gets bigger. Those aro mouths get HUGE!

I know what you mean...at first it was like he sees the food and knows what that is, but then the fingers throw them off. I was just patient and he came to get it.
They seem to have to chomp their food aggresivly too. Never have I seen them just take food in gently. They can stealth right up to it and then they just explode on it. Must be a million year old instinct.
I've got calouses on my finger tips now but, I see the teeth scratches , I better look into some feeding gloves for later.
