Homemade biofilter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the advise the silocone worked.Yeah ive just got it sitting on the back of the tank didnt plan to use it this way but it sits in there pretty good.I shortend it.

Dr joe yeah im using the mechanical filter that came with the tank its a pretty good filter it has the bio material in the front every thing i got is aqua tech made by marine land. The hole tank kit.I like the acrylic tanks but there expensive. There clearer and stonger less glair but i read they scratch easier.

Im thinking this could be turned into a giant nitrate ruductor recurculate the water and release small amounts back into the aquarium.Ive got an air line run into it right now to add oxygen both ways it could be used as many type of filtration.Just a little bulky and unsightley. You can buy a maufacturers filter about what the pvc and pump will cost not sure witch ones better.Life quard rambow makes a cheap inline filter too like 30 to 40 dallars but it doesnt have a pump neither. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=3627&N=2004+113427

It's a very slow process turning those nitrates around. I built one's like this about a year ago, they work to varying degrees. One problem is a constant nitrate load. Under-loaded anaerobic bacteria dies..Over-loaded anerobic bacteria flurishes, then if load levels bacteria dies...Either way you end up releasing worse things back into your tank. I'm still working on that. It's hard to monitor economically.

They do seem to work better with salt systems.

I've got seven prototype filters going right now.

And every week I keep remembering how they used to do this 50 yrs ago...

Water changes...Water changes...water changes.

They're looking better every day.

Oh, here's a tidbit...Did you know they used to use aeration intermitantly?!

You care to post some pics of your filter .

As soon as I get another camera, mine died...and I get some of this mess cleaned up.

Some of these are prototype designs I've contracted to do for proof of performance for clients. So don't look in the background, ok? ;)

I think these type filters works very good may act as nitrate reduction with out recerculation whatever its doing i think its good.
