Yeah, same here, looks like some young tilapia sp.

Their adult size is dependent on the species. They look like Oreochromis (formerly: Tilapia) niloticus which grow to about 10". They can be kept with other cichlids with moderate agression levels.
DO NOT release them back to the wild. Tilapia are an invasive species in CA and the law requires their destruction once caught. If you're caught releasing them, you have no proof they were wild-caught in the 1st place. You could be arrested for releasing an invasive species into local waters and that carries extremely heavy fines, legal fees, possible jail time and other major life hassles.

They only grow to about 10"? I read that they will grow to 2 feet... Do you think they would get along with smaller tanganyikans or do you think they would eat them? or could also put them with my tire track eel?

oh and i didn't catch them in the wild, i caught them in a man made lake.

Some species do grow to 2ft but, not this one.
A man-made lake is still considered "wild" by the state.
And, "cichlids with moderate aggressive levels" does not include smaller tanganyikan species or eels. These fish can be bullies and need similar-sized bullies as tankmates.

What the heck should i do with them? I thought they were some kind of blue gill when i got them :(

Put them in with you tire track eel and if they live they live.... if not you eel had a good meal. You may end up really liking them.
