Power went out last night. Just as I was about to pull the trigger on an aquabid auction I had been stalking btw. :irked:
Had to go to work today. Checked in a few times power still out. After work drove to schenectady to get the generator thats usually at my house. :irked:
Got home to a lit up house! :woot:

So went in to assess the damage. Was most worried about the showtank.Losses were hard but not as bad as I thought. Adult male red empress was the worst loss. Been growing him out for years finally was an amazingly beautiful adult. Both of my adult male yellow labs I was holding in reserve in the showtank as well.
Then down to check the fishroom.Bad but I cant complain. out of the 37 tanks currently in use 2 tanks had major losses.
My entire 3m 15f saulosi colony. breeding group of 12 cynotilapia white top hara.Last 3 aulonocara stuartgrantii "Ntekete" females(thats the end of that line ). Cherry red zebra male and the female I thought was gone that I wanted to breed him to. Group of Sunshine peacocks. half my demasoni colony. My other 2 adult male yellow labs.
And my last 2- 1m 1f Labeotropheus Mpanga red, that ends this line as well. :( Anyone that has seen these will tell you they were truly exceptional.
So ouch not happy today. But Im thankful that it wasnt worse.
Lesson learned. Keep the generator at home!

Dude, this sucks..

But how did you lose that many? I have been out power for over 24 hours- just got electric back around 8...

Out of 15 tanks, I only lost 2 koi.. the only tank that isn't tropical as well.

I thought my rays and large frontosa were going to be goners, but they pulled through and aren't even stressed.

Malawi cichlid tanks are typically heavily stocked to spread out aggression. It was the 3 tanks that were most heavily stocked that had losses. The unseasonal high temps didnt help any either.
And Im on well water so even if I blew off work,no power means no water changing either.

Just kinda weird.

I couldn't do water changes either, which sucked. I'm on city water, but I live elevated, so the water has to be pumped to me... so I was screwed too.

I actually went out and bought a power inverter that connects to your battery just to run the ray tank for at least a few hours yesterday.

My 17 fronts that I have cramped in a 150- which are all 8-14" actually survived, which I was glad because they are not cheap.

I spent 5 1/2 hours doing water changes and I'm not done yet!

sucks! I lost water and power for 8 days in the ice storm of 2007 or 2008.. I legit have just got back into the hobby after losing every fish (dats, geos, rays, and more) in all 10 tanks i had running.. my generator was hooked up to my tanks and the fridge.. it died in 3 days, not ran out of gas, died. My tank water went down to 40 degrees. I had a gas stove and was adding boiling water or very hot water to say the least, until I ran out of poland springs gallon jugs.. it was very sad. i was heartbroken, and thats why I took over 2 years off from this awesomely rewarding hobby.

Old thread here. Sorry for your losses. It really sucks when you planned for the emergency but the the equipment failed on you. I'm in process of installing a setup to run with my newly purchased generator. I'm not concerned about its engine because it's a powerful (for a portable gen anyway) 13HP honda but the alternator is coleman's (not the best). But we can only do what we can I guess...

out of my four fishtanks I have never had a loss how big where the tanks that fish died in tanks under 40 gallons uassaly get cold easaly because there is not as much water about 7 months ago my power went out and the fish in my 10 gallon tank where verry still and they somehow manged to survive. but my 65 gallon tank was like 65 deegrees but the temp was so low in my 10 gallon that it did not even show the temp
