Quickest way to rinse 150 pounds of sand?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yea just an average pillocase its worked for me in the past i used playsand and thats really dirty but it cleaned it really quick.

Like to explain what the method is for cleaning sand this way,is it just a case of putting sand in pillowcase and then running water through it.
I would be really interested to know as I have around 150-200 lb of sand to clean soon and not looking forward to doing it in a 5 gal bucket a few pounds at a time.

When I added sand to the new tank I just threw the sand in and filled the tank. Then stirred the sand up and kept emptying and filling until it was clear. This was the far easier than the bucket method I had used previously on other tanks. It is also much easier on the back.

Yes, it's play sand. The pillowcase method sounds promising! Except, to avoid soap residue, I'll have to buy a new pillow case and rinse it before use.

The sand is going into an empty tank, getting it ready for my Oscar.

I've never tried the pillowcase method, sounds good tho. I used a bucket, and cleaned 250lbs of playsand. Get a friend to help..

Can you return the play sand and buy pool filter sand? You will lose about half your play sand with rinsing and play sand is so fine it will go anaerobic very easily unless you keep the layer realy thin. Pool filter sand does not even need rinsing.

Pool filter sand will not grow anaerobic bacteria. I need anaerobes. They're my friends. I'm growing a pair and doing this on the large scale after seeing it work in 5g and 10g tanks. I rinse the play sand to the point where most of the dust will settle within a few minutes and shift down into the sand to help compact the lower levels. From there it's just a matter of waiting for the mulm to reach decent quantities, and adding MTS and blackworm. Now for the real magic tricks: Baffling my sump return (easy), keeping Oscar from being able to sift the sand (slate laid on the sand?!)!

Hello; Not sure if it is the same as play sand, but I bought 1500 pounds of sand at a local cement business for about $15.00. I used it to bed some drain pipes. I also sifted several pounds to get some particles to add to wet paint on some cement steps as a traction aid. During sifting, the sand grains ranged from very fine silt to roughly pea sized. At that price a person could afford to sift out the unwanted size grains and still have plenty of the size that you are looking for.

About the pillow case method of cleaning sand, is the proceedure to put sand into the pillow case and spray the water into the pillow case opening?

Really? With 3-4 inches of pool filter sand, I've had anaerobic pockets, the sand would bubble from time to time with the gas release.
