i came back this afternoon and my pair of geophagus sp. tocantins were caught in the act of spawning! they are in 90 gallon tank by themselves. water temp is 79F, straight from the tap, nothing added. over the last two weeks i've been feeding them frozen bloodworms and tetra color bits and out of the 6 i am pretty sure i have 4M and 2F. there is another pair that formed in my discus/geo tank so it'll be interesting to see what happens. for now i'm excited i spawned my first geophagus species after gymngeophagus!
the male is carrying something inside his mouth - i couldn't tell if they were also eggs but i assume they might be. the female was seen laying eggs, picking them up and the male doing his part by fertilizing them. there really isn't much sexual dimorphism but i did not the male had a more metallic silverish sheen on him - they normally have thee light orange striations on their sides. i noticed that the courting males lost that sheen. obviously when it came time to spawn the tube on the female was out, but the male did have a pretty obvious tube out - initially i thought i had two females spawning but upon closer inspection i noticed that thankfully only one was laying eggs!
the picture quality wasn't so great but i wanted to get a scene by scene type of shot. you can see the orange eggs!
will keep everyone updated on what happens next!!!!
