Be as effective as if it were in my filter? All the water runs through the back of the background so it would pass through the media. It's 300 gallons and covers the whole back of the tank. Thinking about buying some media to
Ut back there. Any suggestions?
If u put them behind ur 3D background, anaerobic condition will be present due to the lack of water movement. Poor at breaking ammonia and nitrite, but good at removing nitrate.
Yes, if you have pump running behind your background it will work for sure. European guys (who have been using 3D backgrounds for years) usually use that as the only method of filtration in the tank. Look at Lee Nuttall's setups.

The idea is good, but having that kind of foam, chopped up into pieces and put behind the background seems like it would collect a LOT of debris. If you want it strictly for bio, I would use something else. That is probably a bear to clean out.

That's why there's the one large piece of foam on the side... All debris has to pass through that one solid wall of foam before it can go to the floating foam pieces. The pull of the pump from the opposite end of the background draws water through it. So all you have to clean is that one piece of foam occasionally.
It's basically a modified mattenfilter with additional bio. You could put whatever you wanted back there... Bags of ceramic media, crushed coral, etc.
