find a discus breeder i can get 3 inchers for $15 each
I'll definitely do that. I guess it's my fault for looking at the adults instead of younger ones. How many would you put in the 25, and what kinds of tetras would you add with them?

if you can get your hand on some LMB they would look great in that tank.
Exactly, it's 125. I'd really like to do a piranha tank. Now, maybe you can clear this up for me. I've seen RBs grow fully and stay somewhat silver, and I've seen RBs grow fully and turn a blackish color. My LFS has a BEAUTIFUL RB show tank, and they're a brilliant black color with the bright orange/red belly. How do I make sure they turn darker as opposed to silver?
Well there's a few factors that could contribute to this. I'm not a total piranha buff, but I've done quite a bit of research. It could have something to do with the substrate..but probably not here. Piranha get darker the older they get. A piranha could be full grown but not as old as another, and the other would be darker. They turn silver, then teal-silver, then grayish black at old age. And maybe your LFS had a species of rbp from a different river than others that you have seen. piranha are one of those fish that inhabit nearly every area of water in tropical SA, and the differences are few and far between but do occur. Piranha could be from anywhere, and just because it's not labeled as a separate species than "red-bellied" doesn't mean it has diverged somewhat from the generality of a "red-bellied" piranha. evolution is a fickle mistress.
Thanks for taking the time to type that out. That really clears up a lot for me. if I can't get an excellent deal on some discus, I think I'll go with piranha. Any other piranha species you'd recommend? I had a 55 gallon at school last year, and it was a big hit with all of my friends. I'm thinking a 125 full of piranha would be an even bigger hit.
Hahaha yeah it will be. I see you're from chicago, I live about 4 hours away from there and I attend Ball State. I had baby piranhas and everytime I had visitors they would always want me to feed them or put my finger in the tank to prove they won't bite me, etc. There's definitely an entertainment value to it all. Other piranha species recommendations? From my experience, Rhoms are expensive and are a painstaking fish that gets huge, has hissy fits, and can only be kept by itself. Rhoms are a bit more dangerous than rbp, as they are more tempermental than skittish, from what I've seen- they aren't really threatened by people. There are other species of piranha that are very cool and could easily be housed in your tank, but theres a lot of jargon to get a specific species and miss identification would be too easy. You have two comletely different roads there, as Discus are flashy, but imo a bit boring. they're fish for show. With the piranha route, you'll get the entertainment factor, and they're not too hard on the eyes either. good luck!
Large Mouth? Wouldn't they outgrow it too quickly?
