I picked up five little festae last night. One is about 2 inches and the others are about 1 inch. I was just wondering when will it was possible to sex them? The largest has a pronounced spot at the tail and more uniformed color with lots of spangling. The smaller ones have a few spangles with some darker bars. Is the larger one male and the smaller one female or is it to early to tell?

Occasionally you can tell by 3", but it's much more common for sexual dimorphism to become apparent at around 5".
Here's a 3" fish i picked up a few days ago. Id say leaning female, but it's still a little too early to tell. Another inch and things should get alot clearer.
When they get 4 to 5 inches you can really tell for sure. I have 5 around 2.5 to 4 inches and I can't really tell yet
