When does reptile keeping creep into reptile hording LOL

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
By definition hording is having too many of anything to properly take care of. Not the sheer number of in this case animals, but the ability to keep them healthy and clean.

That being said I have around 60 animals in my household. All handleable animals get handling time, and display animals are kept in proper setups.
Does the reptile room have a smell, to a certain extent. Mostly of moist earth and humid air. At least until the end of the week and I have to clean the turtle's tank.;)

Hoarding is VERY subjective as already stated. I couldn't handle this many on my own, luckily for me I have a reptile lover as a GF and we're slowly teaching the grandkid a bit about some of the easier animals.

..I need moar! A lot moar!
LOL

Kittyhazelton, you realy have volunteers?

As for me, I keep almost all my animals in my tiny apartment livingroom of 4 by 4,5 meter because I wanna see 'em from the couch.
Because of noisy neighbours I cannot sleep in my bedroom so I end up between my animals. Fits just right.
8 eheim pumps circulate over 200.000 liters per day at a couple of feet from my head, you can imagine how noisy my neighbours are.
I dont use any kind of air freshener, I just keep the animals clean.
Visitors appreciate the lack of animal odor. So do I.

you can keep infinite pets as long as you can care for them...i only have a whites and a bp, hopefully that will change this weekend

The difference between hoarding and responsible keeping is when the animals start to suffer. If you have more animals than you can properly care for and refuse to give them up then you are a hoarder. For some people this number is fairly low (even one or two) and others may have hundreds and be able to care for them without a problem.

As long as you can take care of everything properly, keep it healthy and happy, it's not hoarding. That or a lot of us on here would be hoarders, haha.

This.

I'm up to 4 newly hatched baby crested geckos, 9 adults and two blood pythons. Herps aren't exactly the same level of time commitment as other pets, most merely tolerate handling and have setups that are pretty low maintenance. IE My dogs shed everywhere, puke/poop on the floor occasionally, need heartworm meds, flea drops, nails cut, anal glands expressed, ears cleaned, hair combed, treats, toys, beds, teeth care, socialization, and have to be bathed constantly. Whereas my snakes poop like once a month and be tossed a rat once a week.
