how do you properly wash a ultima filter

i picked up a tank and it came with a ultima II 1000 filter. its been sitting i read the manual where it says to unscrew the top and spray, but the smell of the water coming out was gross like it was a sewage system gone bad.


any ideas to properly wash it out?

Soak and rinse w 10% bleach solution?

Yep, I would rinse it out first. Then soak in a bleach water solution. Finally, rinse it out really well.
