Does anyone know on average how long a Niger cat takes to grow to about 30"?

Has anyone owned one that has got much bigger than this?

The black overflow on my 450 is 8" square. You can see my Niger just after I got it right at 8" long and the growth over the next 18 months. Now it's about 24".

They grow rapidly. I kept one for a couple years and he was ~30" after 2 but slowed considerably after that.

Nice growth rates you report, guys, about an inch a month. Mine grew considerably slower - perhaps quarter to half of that. Is the fish in the above pics a bit overweight? Not critisizing but trying to learn for myself. I've seen several Pterodoras granulosa looking that roundish before but most Oxydoras niger I've seen have had a more streamlined body.

No, it's fat!
I have an AUL (named genius) in the tank with the Niger Cat. Evolution has not been kind to the AUL. It has the slowest reaction to food out of any fish I ever owned. The Niger Cat, on the other hand, is at the end of that spectrum, it seems to be made for pellet feeding! It vacuums up the gravel, sifts through and eats all the food while the gravel ejects out the gills. You couldn’t design a better gravel feeder! In order to keep the AUL from starving I need to keep the Niger full. Almost impossible J. I actually hand feed the AUL at least once a week to make sure it’s getting enough food!

Nice Niger. I got mine a couple of months ago at about 7" and he is easily now 9-10" so about 1 " per month sounds about right. Have you noticed it slow down in growth ano that it is larger?

Yes. Growth slowed a lot. I think that's why it got so fat.
