hi guys

i have red arowana that is very aggressive, his about 14-16 inches. He used to live alone but has out grown his tank so i moved him to my large cichlid tank-large jaguar, argentea, bourcoti, texas etc- where he is attacking all the fish. Its been like this for a week. Is there any solution apart from taking the arowana out like maybe adding a few more cichlids?

not really. mine is aggressive towards other asian aros (have not tried silvers) - although he does not harrass bottom dwellers like stingray and bichir

I have as SR that was super agressive towards my other aros when i had it in my 220g it was impossible to tame him eventually i put him in a 500g he was still pretty agressive ( he was claiming half of the tank )
what i did was to get a plexiglass divider secluded it in a small portion of the tank for a week then i released him in the general population for a day then back to lockdown for another week then i let him out for a day and a night then back to lockdown for another week the again released but for 2 days ... you get the drill gave him more freedom everytime i took me 2 months and a half and now he is pretty nice to everyone .
Not sure if that will work for yours but its worth a try.
Good luck
Ps: he still snaps from time to time but it nothing serious

usually aro aggressive towards other aros .... but you can always try bro wilkinson method :D

My red will not tolerate tankmates. He lived with rays for a few months but began to torture the rays. Lived with some dats in the 9 inch range and he wouldnt stop battling them as well. I had to face the fact that he doesnt like other fish period. Kinda sucks.

Thea ro is aggressive towards cichlids because it sees them as a threat in its new territory, it will subside, well it should. its proving its number 1. lucky the cichlids are not attacking it, as they tend to be aggressive too. I would leave it, and it will settle down, provide hiding places, line of sight breakers and feed the tank well, it will go away.
My red is aggressive to anything that goes on the top third fo the tank, it will chase it awsay, but anything below the bottom 2/3s of the tank, it will ignore.... during feeding time, everyone is going crazy, it will go crazy too and chase e3verything - just reaserting its authority. i find red arowanas mroe aggressive than gold

i give seal of approval to wilkinson method.
i did it differently and to my silver arowana, yes its not the super red but i found out it works on fishes i tried, i used to breed and raise/train beta to fight and sell when i was kid with the method i was able to mix all the male with no issue until i retrained them to be fighter again to sale or bet on (i do not mean to hurt people who are sensitive to what i did)
what i did to my silver was take it out of IT tank on and off but the basic is the same with wilkinson' method, if you know how to catch/transfer fish without stressing its worth a try but wilkinson method is safer and dummy proof.
for some reason my silver aro was pretty aggressive..it will chase and hurt not only fish in his way (line of sight or his airspace) but also would attack the buttom resident fish which is in its hiding spot. its history now he is now tamer and dont hunt/hurt others but clearly owning the tank which is sharing it with another silver aro (wild caught) which is less then twice the size of his body.
my 240G tank stocking:
1 18-20 inches silver aro (have it since he was 4-5 inches and is my first aro)
1 8-9 inches wild caught silver aro (have it since 2 inches) introduced to the main tank when it was 5-6 inches and took alot of beating new wound everyday
1 clown knife (have it since 3-4 inches)
1 aba knife 9-10 inches (newest addition, have it since it was about 5-6 inches)
1 sen bichir 8-9 inches petsmart deal LOL (grew up together with with my first aro he was 2-3 inches when i got him) this the only fish that my aro never bother/hurt)
1 albino sen bichir about 6-7 inches ( got it couple weeks after the sen bichir)
1 chinnese algea eater about 3 inches and fat (got it when it was tiny little baby added to the main tank when the aro tamer)
victim of my aro:
1 beautiful SB FH 3 inches when beaten to death by my first aro when he was about 10-12 inches, FH attacked aro first and i think that whats unlock the agressiveness of my aro.
1 marble goby about 4 inches the very recent when i decided to call it enough..maybe my aro was hungry.
as right now its peaceful community tank no one hurting anyone..expect feeder feeding treat
