P. denisonii with Gymnos?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have 5 roseline sharks in with my gymnogeophagus (valentines) in an 85 with a large L114 pleco without any issues. The roselines and the geos have been there for 2 years the pleco for 5 years.

Well, I did it. Picked up 14 today. These guys really like currents! Will update in a few weeks....if they last that long :)

Dang, hope you got them for a good price! That's a LOT of denisonii long term in that size tank, because they get so big, but I'm sure you'll have no troubling selling a few in the future if you need to free up some space. Post some pics!

I keep my roselines in a planted tank and I have kept them at up to 80 degrees. They are quite hardy. I bought directly from the wholesaler and only lost 2/10, which isn't bad considering I let them pick them out. They grow FAST.

Beware LFS prices. denisoniis are often overpriced. Someone quoted $25 in this thread, which is a 4-5x markup (current price. they used to be more expensive) on a fish that the wholesalers almost always have in stock. LFS's can be a bit outdated with the prices. It's like the LFS near me, which has EBJD's for $30, but Pet Supermarket (chain store) has them for $9.99

Well, I haven't kept barbs for a long time and don't expect them to all survive, LOL. Got mine from "Apistofishguys" on AB. Highly recommended.

Dude, with all the really sensitive blackwater species you keep/kept (I see that daemon in your avatar buddy!) these barbs should be no problem.

Believe it or not, that $25 price is from the largest freshwater fish wholesaler on the west coast. They just also happen to have a retail store. Those are also for wild caught fish, captive bred can be found for significantly cheaper here. I have seen wild caught a bit cheaper locally as well.

It seems a common practice for LFS to mark up 300-500%. They have to make a living....multiple employees, etc. In this particular case, I suspect they just got a big batch in. Several vendors are selling them at pretty reasonable price now.

Planning to split the group and keep some in an unheated tank when it gets cold to see if they can handle it. They came in at 2"+. Hope they'd put on some size by then.

Thanks for the kind words. For some reason I'm terrible with anything but cichlids....plecos are the worst :(

I'm also terrible with plecos. Good with corydoras though. The denisoni have been $25 each locally since forever, no matter how many batches have been brought in. A lot of their fish are very reasonably priced, but some random species are marked up a lot--clown loaches and pencilfish are two that come to mind.
