Let me start this off by saying I have not bought an oscar yet so this is all really theoretical.

How many months (not years, I know they can't last that long) could an oscar stay in a 55? It has the common dimensions: 48 X 18 X 12.75 (or 13.75 not sure which lol).

and let me repeat I have NOT bought the oscar. I'm no noob, I know what I'm doing and can easily upgrade when the time comes if I end up getting one. I just want to know your opinion.

It's hard to say with time because some Oscars grow faster than others depending how your filtration and feeding regiment is.. I would say when an Oscar is pushing 8-9 Inches thats the time for an upgrade.

Thanks, I have never had an oscar before so I really have no clue about the growth rate, which is why I asked. I don't feed my fish to much compared to most people so maybe that would potentially help me slow down an oscars growth.

You got 7-10 months depending on water quality and how many times you feed it.

That's what I did and my Oscar grew to 9" in 11 months but I feed lots every second day.

hmmm If I could have that growth rate that would be great! It would give me plenty of time to upgrade to another 120+ tank

I think if it was by itself as long as you want with a good filtration system. I had a friend keep a 10 incher in a 30 gallon for 6 months with no problems at all and the fish ate and grew fine.

No i don't think an oscar could last in a 55, they get to big. I've seen pictures of oscars that are 14 to 16 even 17 inches and oscars of that size could not possibly turn around or be comfortable in a 55.

That should never be done, yes the fish might look fine, but really that's completely unintellagent to do to any Cichlid over 6".
