WHAT? Stingray touchpool, cut it off!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Also, that tank you plan to get is not big enough for 3-5 rays. Its really not big enough for any ray in my opinion
2m X .5M X 1M = 78in x 19.6 X 39 (LxWxH) and that equals 250 gallons.
That tank is not wide enough for rays.
Nor is the gallons big enough for that many rays. Rays put off alot of bio.

Also, please do not cut or pull the stinger. It can be harmful and adds stress.
It would be like you pulling your finger nail out...

I agree with Kanta, even though he has never owned a ray....Its just not a good idea, the stickies will give you a better understanding on keeping rays in the near future

U can just get a pair of pliers and clip it off. But if u want a touch tank the stinger will grow back. If u get the tail itself past the area where the stinger is then the stinger and the tail won't come back. But wat i would do is get some food u have and feed ur ray by hand. Be very careful and feed him slowly. If he runs keep ur hand in the water and let the stingray come back. but he will slowly come and eat your food. Then once you keep doing this the stingray will get used to ur hand. Then try to touch him a little bit. After a while he will get used to it and you can get your kids to touch him and feed him but make sure slowly and hold their hand while you do it.
you really got no idea...

I agree, with shock, you have no idea, if you were in uk you could go to jail for cutting off a stingrays tail, I would happily cut off your fingers if I saw you do that to a ray.

If a child is so that it cannot be trusted then it is not tall enough to reach the top of a suitable tank, which your proposed tank is not due to the dimensions.

No idea should keep away from any living thing as you do not have the morals or intelligence to care for them. I hope you get re-incarnated as you will then understand.

Trolly moley!

Haha! No! I'm just curious man. I haven't done anything! I just asked...though I kindda wish I didn't but how could I learn otherwise?

Perhaps they'll learn to be less curious and less naughty whether by parental instruction or learning through experience?

I've talked to them about me having our first reef aquarium, they're kinda excited about it. But I just know they're gonna be really curious with I, one day, bring home rays. I asked about this because I want to avoid any harm to the children. I was thinking maybe if there was a way...you know what I mean? But I'm not yet having rays this time.

There are lots of threads here on removal of stingers - you noted the forum is rich with information and then re-asked a question that has been asked and answered dozens of times..

Oh sorry about that, really! I'm just new hear and I just read some of the posts in the first page! But because of you, I scaned thru other pages and did find a post about the stings. Thanks!

That tank wouldn't be big enough for a freshwater ray (and certainly not for 3-5) but if it's saltwater rays you're talking about mutilating you may want to ask in a different sub-forum.

OK, noted! Any recommendations?

Its not in my nature to knock anyone but i have to agree with Peter, its all too silly to talk about and very dangerous for the inexperienced to contemplate carrying out such an operation.Your question tells its own story, you obviously don't have the know how or the experience, there's a lot more to rays than their stingers(Barb),perhaps you should look at something far less challenging, there's plenty of large impressive fish out there that carry no danger!
All the best!

I'm not discouraged at all. I joined this forum to learn. Don't worry, seemed cutting of the bard ;) is really really bad. So I'm not cutting it, I promise!!!

I noticed that in some shops around, rays with small tails. But, no, I now think cutting the barb is bad. Caution should be taken.

I've also heard this technique before, I've done it in some public aquarium. I fed different kinds of rays, BIG ONES! They are like obedient dogs, really amazing! Thanks for reminding me this one. After my reef is complete, I really want some rays. Maybe I can make a rectangular pond (with roof) in the garden, would really love that. Some of my friends told me I should get the "koi fish", for good luck. But I don't really like the koi, I want rays better for the garden.

I only keep FW fish so I don't know which sub-forum for saltwater rays but should be relatively easy to find.
I'll go and find it! Thanks for the response!

just some friendly advice here, you might want to start out with a 120 dollar ray instead of a 2,500 dollar ray. ;)

Starting small! Yes, I'm considering that. Though I'm really eyeing on black diamond rays.
