WHAT? Stingray touchpool, cut it off!

i'm confused. are you looking for rays to eventually go into your reef aquarium, or do you mean that you will be setting up a freshwater aquarium later on after the reef one is done?

if you're looking for reef ones, you're looking for saltwater rays, which this section is not for. you want to peek over at the sharks and rays sub forum under the saltwater section.

if you are looking for freshwater ones, i'd recommend learning their requirements and how to properly house them before buying such expensive ones. BD's are beautiful, but i would hate not knowing how to take care of them or what to look out for, before losing one as expensive as they are.

saltwater ones have a lesser sting, a bit worse than a bee sting, venom wise.
freshwater ones have a more potent sting.

either way, these creatures need to be respected. it is a last resort defense. they would rather flee than sting, it is their absolute last line of defense.

don't listen to "i have no idea", his name does represent his knowledge.

the touchpools at the zoos do clip their (saltwater) rays barbs, done by professionals. i wouldn't advise the average fishkeeper doing this, or any fishkeeper, as you are not making money off of your rays being touched. the more touching, the more slime coat being removed, the higher the chance of infection and stress, the more chance they can die. plus, you don't know what contaminants are being put into your aquarium. kids especially are notorious for bad hygiene when it comes to dirty hands. soap not being properly rinsed off can also cause distress and more. cheap copper jewelry, pennies, other junk thrown in that you might not notice. the list goes on and on.

i personally will never let anyone else try to touch my rays, they know me, not others. i will not take responsibility for them getting stung, hence i don't allow it. know the risks.

Hello there! I'm setting up another aquarium after my reef is done. I haven't decided yet if Saltwater or freshwater rays. But I want some Black diamonds (an FW).

Noted! Will definitely educate myself more!

Freshwater ones are more potent? I didn't know this! Woah! This info is really helpful! But, may I ask, which of the two groups grow bigger? I've seen saltwater one as size of a round garden table. Do freshwater ones grow as big as well?

Good point there! Everything you said was really helpful. :)

most saltwater ones you buy in the hobby will stay smaller than the freshwater ones. yellow and blue spot especially. most freshwater rays grow to be much larger than their salty counterparts, in this hobby.

EDIT: Ok page 3 is good page 2 had tons of hostility my response is no longer remotely relevant. :END EDIT

I agree, with shock, you have no idea, if you were in uk you could go to jail for cutting off a stingrays tail, I would happily cut off your fingers if I saw you do that to a ray.

Wow guys he asked a question way to be dicks about it. Its something allot of prospective ray keepers wonder about I know I had the same curiosity. Hostility just demonstrates your own ignorance. If you knew your @$$ from your elbow you'd know that being that way doesn't impart a good message onto any one.

Cutting off fingers doesn't really correlate to fingers, We don't have any organ or appendage that exists solely for inflicting pain or killing some one something. Cutting fingers because they have real utility would be akin to someone cutting off large sections of the disk(enough that it doesn't grow back) But I digress...

In the US there are several ray breeders who remove stingers for shipping. Get over yourself they shed them people don't shed anything except hair really so to make a good comparison, cutting a stinger is like getting a hair cut and cutting the stinger out so it doesn't grow back would be like getting scalped.

As someone who has partaken in several animal rehabilitation and even been witness to some several animal first aid. It seems like if there was a safe way to remove a stinger that it would be beneficial to the keeper since it would help them to better care for the animal after its removal. I cut my dogs nails even though it makes them a nervous reck for a day or two so that I can more easily cohabitate with them the stinger could be perceived in a similar fashion.

I don't have rays but I'm thinking of getting them. I don't plan to remove a stinger or anything but I had this very question a short while ago. To all the other people flaming on here calm down!

Maybe read the post again. No idea wanted to chop the whole damn tail off from where the barb starts growing. How would that be not like cutting off your fingers. What safe way is there to remove the barb? You want to yank it out with pliers like No idea suggested?
