oscar behavior

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well I have an extremely aggresive oscar lol. And hopefully he will stop. He was doing it a little again last time I checked on him. I think he will have great coloration eventually so I would like to be able to keep him...

Do you have like a 10 gallon or something if the balas start getting beat on so maybe you can put them in there untill the oscar comms down. I think the dither fish idea is a good one. Get something thats tough but not aggressive like a catfish for the oscar to chace

naw I just got the 55. It seems like the 2 smaller fish I had made him aggresive to everyone, so now that their gone (I think, not sure about the danio yet), he seems to have calmed down. So I don't think dithers would be the best idea

OK thats good. Hope you keep him sounds like a cool fish. Keep posting pics and keep us updated on his growth.

O well you gave it your all. I dont kno if weak fish like balas and tetras can handle cichlids.
They can be kept with cichlids. It depends on the type of cichlids, tank space, and individual temperament. Many of the members here keep schooling fish like Tetras and Barbs with their cichlids. Sometimes it works and sometimes it just doesn't.

Maybe small non aggressive cichlids but every cichlid i have had would probably eat or kill balas. Who does it tho? do they have any pics or vids i would like to see what it looks like.

yeah I've seen multiple tanks on this website with Bala's and oscars together. I think I just got an extremely aggresive oscar, maybe I'll have more luck with one later on....

Arg there is a specific member that I remember does or did have an oscar in with Bala's but I can't remember the username. and I have seen random pictures of tanks where the two have coexisted. I think when I have my bigger tank it'll all work out fine. Right now I think I'm just gonna stick to severums in the 55.

There are many set ups with cichlids and schooling fish. Use the search function and you should find plenty. One of your problems is that you offer feeder fish to your cichlids. This will make it very difficult to keep any smaller fish with them. Many people including myself don't practice giving feeder fish to our cichlids. Other than their potential disease and parasite risk, goldfish and the like have very little nutritional value. But that's another topic. You can search that too.
