PLECO HUNT

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It is almost the same situation with the Asian Carp but not as bad. They are planning to process the carp to feed the needy maybe they can do the same for the pleco. It would be a more exotic fish to eat. Maybe Andrew Zimmer from the Food Channel can promote this one.

I do believe that plecos are a staple food down where they are caught. I have seen many shows where they are right out in the food markets for sale.

Just a little boney maybe. :P

And not all of them could have found homes, remember one of the reasons PEOPLE RELEASE plecos is because
1) zoo's are full of them,
2) not everyone has the room to house a pleco with who nows what parasites,
and 3) people with ponds probaly dont want to be over run by them.
In my opinion, it was not completely "useless" killing of fish because I had no option AND why do you think people got rid of them in the first place? Where could they have gone? It is best that they were euthanized instead of going to an unresponsible owner on craigslist that want to shove a pleco the size of a tank into one.
Mshill90 thats why i didnt save them^

My other problem is how would i house them untill i found them homes? i dont have a pond or aquarium to put them all in when these guys are huge!

Why so many flaming on her? She didn't put the plecos there some idiot did. She is only doing what you can do with an invasive. Come to Michigan and see what the asian carp has done to the Great Lakes. Scubachick keep up the good work!

i'm not saying that you should have taken the burden upon yourself to save them.. because we can't save them all.

I would however suggest to your father about hosting a benefit maybe, and then the plecos can die/be killed but it still does something good for the community. Like $5 a person, and fish all the plecos you want. Then proceeds go to some organization.

Then donate the plecos to schools for science dissection, or feed, or something of the sort..

Just an idea.

yea i grew up on lake okeechobee and you can just walk along the bank and see their tails sticking out of the caves...we used to just grab their tails and pull them up...stroooong suckers! (literally) just in a 100 yard section there are almost too many to count

Those are breeding caves, I bet the original plecos that were dumped there are long gone and these that are being caught were born there. Doesn't change the issue...just some side information.

Yea the point I was making in my first post was the plan from the start was to kill kill kill. Why not wait until a better solution came up

thankyou for the ideas. Im talking to him about it, and honestly I had no clue what we were going to do with them untill after I took them out of the lakes.
But please dont flame me, like allen said IM not the one who released them in there.

I don't think anyone is flaming you here.

From what it sounds like, you weren't in charge, just along for the ride. It would be great to find homes for all of those Plecos but that would take a lot of energy and time. Maybe the owners of the pond don't want to spend that much time and energy on it and just want the Plecos out of the pond ASAP.

It just seems like it sometime. And pretty much I was along for the ride, and the community wanted them out. Also the water tech. said that there were too many living in the lake. Apparently it does not concern them untill they can spot more than a few. But now that i know im hopeing next time I go to catch the last few i can find homes for them. Im just trying to figure out what I could hold them in thats cheap untill i can find them homes.

Kiddie Pools would work.
