thankyou!

but i dont like FH's either..

well couldn't GT's crozz w/ say blue acaras or port acara? they are in the same genus right? Aequidens.....do you think it has to do w/ the genus of the fish rather than the species? or region of origin....just a thought.....i think creating your own hybris in your house not for sale is kinda like xperimenting not playing god cuz i mean it's not cloning or splicing genes......flowerhorns are neet i think they created a rather beautifull fish they aren't introducing other genes like from ppl or monkeys. who gives a **** anyway

I've kept JD & GT together for a long time and they have never bred... I doubt this is a possible mix...

Last month National Geographics featured Neandrothals (magazine front cover & feature article as well as a TV special)... on that show they stated that some genetic researchers belive that two species can cross breed if they have split from a common ancestor less than 1 million years ago...

I'm not sure how, or if, that translates from mamals to fish... or if they are correct... but it was an interesting idea...

We currently have several examples of fish that can breed beyond their own genus, although I hear a lot of people suggesting this is some sort of boudary... Convicts being the easiest example...

I waqs cleaning my tank the other day syphoning the sand, when i saw what looked like floating debris, on inspection it turned out to be fry, from jack dempsey whats strange is there are no other jd"s in the tank i have (all juvenile) 2 Oscars, 1 Accara, 2 pleco, 1 JD, 1 GT. Now i thought it may have been the accara but wrong, my GT is taking on the fatherly roles he"s garding his fry, hes moving his fry'and doing all things a father should be doing, I hAD NO IDEA THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN! I thought my only chance was with the two oscars...incredible the world of cichlids

I want to see some pics. There was a lot of talk of it, but seems like nobody ever posted any.

Also.....Just got a mayan female.....Seems that my male JD and this fish are hitting it off. The JD keeps my GT away from the mayan, and they swim around together all day. If they breed, I've got a 30 gallon ready to go for some grow outs.

Wasn't trying to breed anything.....But if it happens it happens.

Correct.

So anyone that had some of these hybrid grow outs should now have some decent sized fish. And I would like to see some pics if this is the case :)

You may only get pics from love4thegt. Everyone else that mentioned posting pics or having one of these hybrids has last activity dates in '08' and '09'. So they haven't posted in a while. The hybrids mentioned at the beginning of this thread at the LFS are most likely long gone now if the OP didn't go back and purchase them in '08'. You could also try sending them PMs to see if they could update this thread with pics.

green terrors can only hybridize with other acara species...until this is proven wrong. it is possible that this just hasn't happened in the mere 120yrs or so of keeping new worlds...i'm waiting for the green terror x severum :)

I don't understand the fasination with hybrid garbage fish that are deformed.

Actually, I think that makes it worse. At least Blood Parrots are so grossly deformed that you know it is worthless. All this hybridization annoys me to no end. It dilutes the population.

For instance, you have a Rocio octofasciata x Y. Then you sell it to someone who puts it in with another R. octofasciata. Then a good portion of the fry look like the R. octofasciata that get sold back to pet store as such. You see it in the tank and go, "hey look a really pretty JD. He could go with my female at home." It just spreads every where. Those Flowerhorns seem to spawn with about everything. They are genetic pollution in my eyes. It would not be a problem if everyone would just cull the hybrid fry, but there is a lot that don't/won't do it.

I will not buy cichlids from a normal LFS. There is one I trust to some extent about 50miles away, but I'm still always cautious. Kind of stinks. Between the economy and things like this is why I keep seeing a lot of LFS out of business.
