A good one is hard to find. There are many factors but most desirable factors are in rare gene combination, thus you have to breed many bad flowerhorns to get a few good ones. And all that time you have to feed them and take care of them.
Then, often, you have to ship them to the united states from thailand

I'm assuming you don't have a very nice flowerhorn if you think it is sad.
Sadly, often a bad looking flowerhorn will be worth less because it is a hybrid, and theres no telling whether it will look good or worse in the future. With a pure species you have a standard life history and you know what kind of future they can attain to some degree.

that is why flowerhorns vary so much in price.

but it is kind of a small question....

what is a pure species of FH? all FH are hybrid and they don't even have scientific name!
 
I think what Kaliedoscope is trying to say regarding about pure species is that you have an image of how that certain fish will turn out to be in the future. Unlike FH which is a hybrid and it can change overtime as there is no tell on how they will be like(now a days most flowerhorn can be differentiated from high to low quality at 1-2" besides Kamfa). And flowerhorn price is what it is due to the work it took to achieve at a certain quality work of art it is as of now. Try and create one from scratch yourselves see how long it takes to reach where it is as of now. And flowerhorn do have a scientific name...Cichlasoma Ssp. (Cichlid Species)

You sir, are one confused motherf...fishkeeper... You think they're ugly and look sad, so why do you even keep one...?

Your fish probably have the same perspective... "What's with this owner... he looks so sad and ugly... I wish I was back at the fish store where all the kids smiled and pointed at me!"

Think about it... he has a flowerhorn, and yet he's not into hybrids, he thinks they're ugly, and he thinks they look sad. On top of that, he doesn't know what he paid for...
