My baby RTC is not eating :( , he is a little bit chubby. The water parameters are:

Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 25-30
pH: 7.2
Temperature: 26.7 degrees Celsius.
Tank: 40 gal (36x20x9.5)

I have tried prawns with garlic, prawns and mussels, bloodworms and I am tempted to get some minnows. I have had him for 2 days and he is hiding quite alot, should I be worried?

mines hides all day but when the lights go out hes eaten all my dwarf frogs and ghost shrimp and i hand fed him a small rosy red . had mine about 2 weeks now.
try to see if hes more active when the lights are off

Sometimes it takes longer than two days for a fish to settle in. Also your water is fine but what was the water like from where you got him?

When the lights are off he moves about. The parameters for the lfs tank did not look good as the water looked yellow in a bucket when it was placed next to my tank water. But the one good thing about all this is that my soft shell (3.2 inch) is eating more and is swimming about more (the soft shell is too big to get in the RTC's mouth). At night I drop prawns and they disappear but I am not sure if its my baby soft shell.

YOU NEED TO GET HIM OUT OF THE 40 GALLON ASAP. It wiil take a month for the new tank to cycle so buy it now. He will easily out grow that tank in a month!!!!!!!!

When he starts eating your toxins will spike, then your ph will drop rapidly due to his waste especial is your gh and kh arent correct. YOU NEED TO BUY A BIGGER TANK TOMORROW.

He will grow at a rate of an inch a week, mine is growing 3inch every 2 weeks. so in a month yours could be 11" and i promise your tank will not be able to handle it. I put a baby in cycled tank with a rena xp2filter and all my levels spiked and PH was a nightmare. I had to take all other fish out and regulate his feeding down to every other day just to stabalize the tank. He is now at 8 " and i regulate the PH with a 10% water change daily. My 125 gallon is almost done cycling then he will go in there. But the 125 gallon is still a semi-permenant solution for a couple of months, 300+ is what you will within a year. DO NOT POWERFEED HIM IN THE 40.

Remember this fish is nocturnal so you shouldnt see it active during the day + most are skidish till there bigger.

Don't worry guys, I have a 250g kids pool cycling, I know what I am doing lol. I got him because of the great deal and I put him in my 40g until the kids pool cycles. :)

Just Prepare for the rollercoaster ride of your life. Just imagine a great dane that must be kept in a fish tank, just that your RTC will grow faster, bigger and live longer.

I am also doing 15% water changes every day because my filter is 'not brilliant' shall we say. Thanks for helping guys :) I just saw him swim about so I am happy :p
