FX5 in a 35gal saltwater?

It will work fine in saltwater. While I don't believe there is such a thing as over filtration, you may want to do something with the output so that the current isn't so strong, spreading it out across maybe four or five outlets rather than the dual outlet it comes with.

My only concern is that in a 35 gallon hex, the normal output would cause waves rather than surface disruption.
 
an FX5 would definitely turn a 35 hex into a whirl pool. Without a doubt.
 
You will need to be creative with the flow but I think you can make it work

This. Agreed. Run the flow directly into porous rock like lava rock, or whichever saltwater alternative.
