Clown loaches can make audible sounds???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Mine scared me quite a few times in the first week I had them too. If I wasn't checking to make sure my tank wasn't cracking then I was making sure they were still alive. Now I love them for their personality. Slightly offtopic question but does anyone know if I add any other types of loach I.E. yoyo or zebra, would they school with the clowns or do the individual species stay separate.

Mine STILL scare me after over a year. Sometimes I SWEAR one of them is dead.

Loach species generally stick to their own kind. I would keep them on groups if you want to keep multiple species. A LFS here has a mixed loach tank and that tank has some serious aggression going on!

I've never heard my CL school make any such sound but the immediate first thought for me would also be "oh no is my tank coming apart?!" Lol.

How big are they? At some point, I bet you will, and they get louder as they get bigger. Mine did it the most around feeding time, especially when they got special treats like frozen foods

They are about 2.5-3" now I'd say. That's total length. So still small. They are actually growing pretty darn fast though compared to what I have read about their growth being quite slow.

First time I heard the '' cracking '' sound I looked at my ipod a couple times , thinking it was possessed , my desk is beside the aquarium, so I 'm like oh ok it's the clowns , off topic this so far as in feeding the clowns maybe you guys can suggest something besides waffers, flakes and pellets and snails

red pepper( boiled )
cucumber
cooked beef ?!?!
blood worms
salmon
clams
hot dog !

I just feed my loaches new life spectrum and the occasional slice of cucumber if I have some on hand. A quality pellet is really going to be better for them than any of those other foods listed by themselves, as they should basically have all the protein and vegetable based ingredients they need. Plenty of nutrition threads around. ;)
