Female almost killed male jd!

My female JD layed eggs last night. I woke up and the male was super mest up cut up fins breathing really heavy and in bad condition . His mouth is like locked open, what should i do? and this never happend before why did she almost kill him??


p.s how long does it take for JD eggs to hatch

but im not sure why, did you turn off the lights ? they often mistake there mates for predators so they attack them when they can't see. i usually leave my fish tank light on for 3-4 days straight until the eggs hatched. i once did to 6 days just to wait until the fry was free swimming

So you don't think the eggs are fertile or was that a joke? And yes the lights were off i was in the keys for the day and my mom forgot to turn them on for the whole day, and they hatched that day..

Can someone second that, to leave the lights on until baby's hatch. I was thinking of doing that too.

They are cichlids and Jacks are especially Violent when spawining or guarding eggs...hence the name of Champion Boxer. Lights off has nothing to do with it...he did something unintentionally like make clean an egg...these times are mostly for female to tend to eggs and male guard perimeter.

Usually takes 3-4 days for cichlid eggs to hatch...Are they by themselves? They need to attack others to divert aggression AWAY from each other. In fact it creates a tighter bond. The "Us against them" type of teaminin up. My male FH used to want to kill the female, but once put in with my RTMotas they are a tight pair now. Make sure you keep a barrier btw the 2 dif species.

Shes on other side of tank now in her root spot and hes guarding eggs. I thought they had a tight bond already this is like there 7th baby batch, but shes never beat up on him like this. And yes its a 120g community with a 2 jags one 2" and one 5", a female convict, and a albino tiger O. But they have had many successful batches before this with same setup.
