Hello everyone,
I recently got some hikari cichlid pellets for my arowana. When I tried feeding him some, he ate a few and then spit them back out:cry:. I've heard that you shouldn't feed them anything but the pellets for a few days and when they are hungry enough they will eat. Is this the right method? i would hate to starve my fish.

tiffany.. thats not the case really.. you don't need to starve your aro to do this.. at a small size it is recommended not to starve them.. its actually a good sign the aro took it and spat it.. the aro thinks it is food.. what is your aro being fed otherwise.. try to chuck in a few pellets along with the food your aro is taking.. as and when your aro starts taking the pellets.. gradually reduce the other food and increase the pellets.. about starving.. when one of my aro was around 16", thats when i started pellets.. never ate them.. but i kept throwing them along with the feeders and one fine day the aro ate it.. before that i starved the same aro for a week on three different instances and never worked.. well lets see how it works for you.. cheers :)

Hello Kaya,
I only hand feed my aro because the shrimp/worm sinks and I don't want him to get drop eye so I think he just wasn't used to eating free floating food.

DE is a big topic of discussion.. and mostly assumptions.. there is a 100% chance that silvers will get DE.. very rare to see a perfect aro.. people think it because the aro looks down.. reflection etc etc.. there have been numerous threads on DE.. if you do a search you can read up a lot.. Personally.. i think DE is related to head trauma.. jumping out of the tank.. hitting a tank top etc.. anyway just keep giving the pellets.. the aro will take it..

Not trying to start a debate but if DE is from them jumping why are silver more prone to it than the rest? I think it might have to do with breeding but its one mans speculations LOL

Anyways Tiffany you say you don't want your arowana to be starve but You continuously insist on adding a tank mate that can potentially kill it? Reapply doesn't make sense but its your choice I guess

As to getting the arowana to eat have to try hand feeding it pellets? I mean if u hand feed it them it should be use to you and know that what's in your hand is food right?

To the OP: I had the same issue with my 5" aro that I just picked up last week. Try the hikari floating cichlid pellets and it just spit them out. Then I switched to hikari aro sticks and the aro loves them. Best of luck, it shouldn't be difficult.

just feed your aro what it likes..as kaya said try the pellets in between or you can stuff the prawns with pellets..do not starve your aro at this size..its too small for that..DE in silver aros is almost certain sp do not worry about your aro looking down..good luck with raising your aro tiffany
