You shouldn't have do this if you run the correct pump or one a little smaller than what is recommended to get the correct exposure to the light. Also replacing the bulb at the correct intervals and cleaning the glass that surrounds the bulb does wonders for the efficiency of whatever unit you purchase.I would put two sterilizers in succession so whatever needs to be sterilized gets enough exposure to the UV light
