When I was 12 I had piranhas and some full grown oscars and full grown pacus but those weren't my first fish before when I was 9 I had some jack.dempseys but the younger you start the more you will learn
Trial and error that all I got to say, try again and go over what could go wrong so it doesn't happen again.
trial and error is fine if it is preceded by research first. Unless one does not care about the needless death of their fish and has no problem buying as many fish as needed to replace the ones killed off during the blind trial and error.
