Hey im wondering what the best tankmates for an armatus would be. Not what can go with it, but what are the most successfully kept fish with it?

I was thinking about putting in a delhezi bichir and jaguar cichlid with one, would that work?

I'll say feeders or rays

Bichirs probably okay - Jag will probably eat more than just it's share of food - too many MFkers lost payara to the rays stinger - I'd go Datniods

Dats work? Because I really want a dat too but thought it would have issues with the armatus. What about sizes? Dat bigger than armatus, armatus bigger than dat? Or what?

In captivity Armatus will get twice the (size 24"or more) of the common 12" Dats (indo + silver) and grow faster. With any predatory co-hab it's usually trial ,error, and luck nothings written in stone. I've done it with all 3 species of Hydrolycus however the most successful, longest lasting Dat - Vamp combo was the smaller Payara - Scomberiodes.

Dats ignored the Payaras and visa versa. I've had more issues co-habing multiple Payara and growing out small Payara in small tanks (less than 100gal) than Co-habing w/ other fish large enuff not to get eatin'.

On a side note - I got slamm'd here on MFK for growin' RBP's in 29 gal. - a few years later - 9" Male RBP, 10" Female RBP, 12" Caribe in 75 gal. - Trial, error, and luck.

i wouldnt reccomend silver dollers. i had full size silvers around 6 inches and he did not like them. he stuck his fangs through there head. they swam around all whacky like they were drunk so i had to rid of them.

Wow.... Guess times change.

So MFKers have rays stinging Armatus now? Never heard of this. Also never heard of anyone but Vamptrev hitting 2' with an Armatus and still have yet to hear of any 1 person being successfull (similar in size to the big ones in the wild) in raising one.

I have a tribe of 1 eye injured Dats that dont appreciate armatus.
I had a larger motoro eat 2 armatus
My Armatus ate 4 P bass cichlid, African Tiger Pike, kill a pleco/ arowanna, and several tats lose an eyes.
My much larger arowanna took a fanging to the eye a couple times.
I had a school of Red hooks and black bars that drove my armatus crazy.....causing him to fang everyone in his way.
My Tigrinus almost lost a whisker and almost a eye in the middle of the night for messing him.

Now for what works long term.......................................let me think...........................................still thinking................................
still thinking.....................OK............ this might help...............

Arnartus need alot swimming space or they will bang the glass and fang tank mates as they get bigger.
They do well with Rays provided the Ray diameter is smaller than the length of a young Armatus
Bichir swimming in the lower water column dont seem to irritate the armatus
Anything that is silver and or with big eyes in the mid / upper water column is at risk for losing an eye.
Anything fish in the mid water column that is long/ slender shaped, 3/4 the size of the armatus or smaller could be food.
Florida Gars (no alligators) are thick skinned and when similar size do well.
Basically bottom dwelling fish (no cichlids) do the best. Anything swimming in the same water column as the armatus is going to be at risk for injury.
You pretty much set up the tank around the armatus and everything else is despensible.
