Just bought a 5" Xingu Rhomb and hes now in my 75gal with wood and plants. it was him or a beautiful ruby red that was about 7". the rhomb looks so small in the tank that i feel i made a mistake since they are skittish piranha. anyone have one of these and can share a story on them being active and personable like ruby reds or should i trade him back in for the ruby red that was a bit more expensive?

You can't really compare them like that, a 5" rhom is still a juvi and it's normal if it hides a lot, at least at first it will until it's settled in your tank. once it feel comfortable it will be more active. it also depends on each fish's personality, some could be crazy right off the bat and some can be skittish and takes a good amount of time until it comes out of its shell. same goes with ruby red spilo but at 7" its at adult size so it could act more bold than a small juvi rhom but again it depends on the personality of the fish. the question is which fish you like to look at more? what made you to get the xingu rhom over the ruby red spilo in the first place?
personally I would get a much larger rhom for a 75g if you don't want to grow one out yourself but that's just me.
where did you get rhom from anyway if you don't mind me asking.

I have a five inch ruby red. I have had him fore about eight months now. He is just starting to come out of hiding when I am around.

I have a 7" Xingu. He hides a fair amount, but when its feeding time he's waiting on the water level for food. He's a chaser too, he may hide, but he chases you across his tank :)

Give him time. :)

piranha = skittish. It's like saying, "I picked up this oscar that has spots and breathes water, should I trade him in?"

Not all the time, like I said some do take alot of time.

But in general, yes they are skittish. But definately seems with size/ maturity they lose it. My old 16" Cariba was a stubborn ****er, never skittish and wouldnt move for anyone.

thanks guys. i bought my rhomb aquascape. hes already alot more active but yea i might get a larger one. it is the particular personality and its hard to tell when they are in a small square fish tank. just didnt want to have a $150 mistake without getting some feedback. thanks

I absolutly love rhoms !!I have a 6" Gold Diamond rhom he is driving me nuts with his shyness but i wouldnt trade him for the world (well maybe for a large Piraya or 15"rhom lol) i have him in a 125 gal tank that is basically bare (my fault)i was given this advice from someone i thought was an expert on these fish, but i will add more decor and hope he comes out of his shell.Dont give up on your rhom just tet.
