My first fish tank - Circa 1979 - Oh how things have changed!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
In June of 1979 the The Seattle Super Sonics won the NBA Championship against the Washington Bullets

This is the most amazing part of the story... RIP SuperSonics / Now the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Sorry couldn't resist they have been gone since 2008.

Great memories, I got my first tank for Christmas of '77, 10 gallons with a corner air driven box filter, stocked it with neons which proceeded to die, I remember crying because I killed them:cry:. I was 8 and neither me or my Dad had any clue as to cycling a tank. My first marine tank was set up in '89 using a wet/dry with a rotating spraybar and DLS, I eventually took the DLS out when it collapsed the tray it was sitting on, ever tried to clean those?, and replaced it with a box full of plastic army men for bio media, cutting edge for the time LOL. You are right Redear, things sure have changed.

Great memories as well, thanks for sharing! I had a similar salt-water set-up! :)

I started keeping fish in 1968 with wrough iron double stand (29G on top 20G on bottom). By 1971 I had added double 30G and 55G. In 1972 I was running 16 tanks and breeding geos, angles, kissing grommies and some early African Cichlids to help pay for college ($125/quarter at the U of MN). I also built my 1st tank (4' X 4' X 1') for my black arrowana (had to feed him bait minnows because I only had access to flake food). How times have changed!

our first tanks were given to us by an uncle of mine I think one was a 30 and the other a 15 complete with everything including fish one had an undergravel filter and the 30 had a hob that worked with an air pump and an undergravel with a couple of old whisper pumps they were both grossly overcrowded gouramies angels goldfish neon tetras guppies swordtails black tetras some serpae tetras a redtail black shark cory cats chinese algae eaters and with the exception of the redtail shark everything else was at least two of each there were 3 different types of gouramies in there blue, kissing, and dwarf overcrowd much?:screwy:I cant seem to remember how we did water changes only that they were few and far between and being in Brooklyn the water just didnt come out of the faucet clear to begin with and of course no water conditioners were used once again:screwy: but I cant recall ever having any kind of instance where we had to medicate for any reason all those fish in those small tanks and youd think maybe some ich or something go figure now Ive got monsters and sometimes a little stress and a drop in temp and BAM ich rears its ugly spotted head oh well those were the days thanks for starting this thread brought back some amazing memories :woot::thumbsup:

I belong to an aquarium society in Saskatchewan Canada, and a fellow member who is about 85. was showing us his massive fish room (he has more tanks then his age, he has 88 5-20 gallon aquariums.) Anyway he showed me his first aquarium which was from 1958. The whole frame and lid of the aquarium was made of steel, the surface of the steel looked like it was pounded (like the surface wasnt flat it had round dents like a golf ball all over it) the tank was only 10gallon but it was heavy as hell. he has it empty in the middle of his room just to remind him.

You know something, i am ashamed to even say it, but that tank in the pictures and video, here's what i held in 1980:

2 big Oscars
2 big green texas cichlids
1 red tailed shark
1 rope fish
1 elephant nose fish
1 convict cichlid
and a bunch of other assorted fish I cant remember.

Filter? The undergravel filter you see. Water changes? Sometimes. All in an 18 gallon.... with 3 inches of gravel...

My god what was I thinking... hey I was 9! :)
