How early can you sex GT's?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the best way to tell the sex of a gt is by venting it. you can not always go by color or fin size to tell the sex apart.

I found the best way is to look at the dorsal fin, The back will be more pointed on the Male. Females will also have a slightly pointed fin later but it takes years. I also found domanant Males tend to have the more of a point and more color than others of the same age and size. look for these characteristics in the biggest of the fish at the store, they are usually Male.

just out of curiosity, what is venting?

This is not a very accurate way to tell if it's male or female. I seem many youn female carry the traits and look male but ended up laying eggs. 10+ years ago you might have been able to go by pointed fin or colors, but now days that not accurate, venting the best way to know for sure.

venting is how you find out if your fish is a male of female by the anal opening

Koyote is on the right track but I'd like to make some corrections lol. Venting is a very accurate way of finding out the sex in fish. However, you're not looking at the anal opening, but rather the sexual opening. Means of venting are to catch the fish preferably in a wet cloth/net, flip the fish over and examine the sexual opening. The anal opening will come first then the reproductive opening. With male fish, the sexual opening is usually the shape of a V so it would look like this o> and females will have the shape of a U, Co <-- The o is the poop shoot lol. Since you already have a female, you could look at her vent, then go to the petstore and ask if they would let you vent them or at least show them the fish's vent. Good fish stores won't have a problem with this. If you find that you can't vent it, always go with the biggest most dominant fish in the bunch.

Questions?

It was good of you to answer my question, I haven't been wrong yet with my method but thats not to say its not flawed, I'll try this venting thing also.

I went with looking for the one with the brightest colors and hope its a male it worked my female is way darker then my male
