How is it possible to NOT have a sub-forum in ancient fish for Amia Calva?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
P.S while your at it, make the same request for sturgeon, even older than bowfin

Agreed, and I did exactly that in post #7 of this thread.

"Just keep the same number of (Sub-Forums) in the Ancient fish section, disolve the (lungfish - ghost sub forum) and replace it with the Amia Calva sub forum. Give it a couple months, and if it has inactivitly level approahhing the lungfish sub-forum, than you can disolve it too and either give the "slot" to Sturgeon or just continue with one less sub-forum on the Anciem section in MFK. "

There's no need for sarcasm or attempts to stir things up. I merely stated the fact. New subforums are not going to be created just because one person asks for it. All of the individual subforums were created based on interest and activity. Put those two into action and you will get the subforum.

I meant no harm, or sarcasm. The Bowfin I keep indoors (as well as my ocsars in a different tank) attack the glass on the tank or lid attempting to get mice crawling by the tanks. I have an old farm house out in the country and do have mice, since Dulsa (my cat) died many years ago. I used to catch these mice in a box trap with peanut butter and run the mouse down to the pond to throw it in for the LMB to eat. That would be a simple thing to do, if I can find a friend with a video camera to film it.

I was basing this idea on the graphic thread with the pike eating the duckling. I would positively seek approval from a moderator before ever posting any video. (Never tried and am not even certain how at this point!

Madding is a much more experienced fishkeeper & MFK poster than myself. I am absolutely thrilled that he has taken on the challenge to get this wonderful fish recognition and generate the required traffic.

Pharaoh, Sorry if I angered you with my passion for this beast. Please check out the poll that Madding started in the GAR forum of the Ancient Fish section of MFK. Favorite Gar/ Hosta? I swear and am sure that you can verify, that I voted for the Longnose Gar on this poll.

Even without my vote for the Bowfin as the "favorite" species of Gar, the bowfin is STILL the second favorite "GAR" of all species! Can we keep an eye on this poll and see how it plays out?

Hmmm...insulting the MFK site name and other sub-forum to get what you want? Because that makes sense:screwy:

I am all for creating sub-forums as long as it garnishes traffic to the site. However, I don't believe there is enough traffic or Bowfin keepers to get enough (I like them too...can't have them, but I like them). Funny thing is...I would like to see Snakeheads in this part of the forum, but Other Monsters will do. If there was truly a following for Bowfins, then there would be more traffic in the Native/Coldwater forum and it would've been noticed.

The bowfin is doing pretty good over in the gar forum on Madding's poll.

Snakeheads aren't even that primitive, especially in comparison to the other members of the Ancient Fish forum... Honestly, any and all Teleosts shouldn't even be in the Ancient Fish forum if we wanted to have a clear divider for the whole "ancient" deal from both an evolutionary standpoint (molecular evidence) and an age/fossil record standpoint (for the most part) with more emphasis on the evolutionary side of things because of how incomplete the fossil record is.

Ideally, the Ancient Fish forum structure (changes in green) would look something like this if it was restricted to non-Teleosts, e.g. truly ancient fishes. This phylogeny is the one that's being used to support said organizational structure.

  1. Freshwater Stingrays
    • They're bottom dwellers and fit nicely in that forum because of their behavior, but they are the most primitive commonly-kept fishes (based on the previously mentioned phylogeny).
  2. Lungfish
  3. Polypterus
  4. Gars and Bowfin
    • Bowfin do not generate enough forum traffic to warrant their own separate forum, but these two groups of fishes are very closely related (Holostei) so this makes for a logical grouping for the sub-forum.
You'll notice that I did not include both "Sturgeons & Paddlefishes" and "Lampreys" because the do not generate enough forum traffic to warrant a sub-forum despite qualifying as "Ancient Fish." You'll also notice that I cut out both the "Arowana" sub-forum and the "Knifefish" forum while also leaving out snakeheads, too; all of these fishes are Teleosts therefore they're not really primitive enough to fit the "Ancient Fish" criteria.

Osteoglossiformes do deserve a forum in ancient fish as they are ancient fish... Knifefish needs to be correctly defined as the current definition adds Non-ancient with ancient. The best solution would be to combine Mormyrids with Featherbacks into Aros...Bony-tongues... I have always found it ammusing that the few species of Featherbacks somehow makes all "knifefish" ancient.. Really it is just the 10 species of Bony toungue knife fish that make them so.. And oddly few seem to keep those fish.. Yet here we have Bowfin in limbo......

Featherbacks should be added into Aro's along with Morymrids.. Knifefish should be eliminated.. Most of the talk on knifefish is about the Charicin forms and not really ancient at all.. Get the featherfins out and link with Aro's.. Add Bowfin to Gars.. They are a natural fit.. Why the opposition to this??? I'm not sure. Means nothing to you Mods as we the users add the content you do not.. all you do is shuffle stuff...and then complain a whole lot any time we make you do work. Just do your job it was what you where elected to do.

Might be good idea to just listen to the tribe....
