Are all flowerhorn hybrid's?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I loled. Be it you're Caucasian, Hispanic, Asian, African, we all share the same DNA. We are not separated into different species or genus's just because of our race lol.

we are all the same species, race is a form of catagorizing by subspecies. crossing of subspecies is considered crossbreeding. eg. bulldogs x pugs

No it's not.. I've been in some very heated debates with some Biology professors. I can tell you, race does not = a subspecies. Race is a sociological creation, not a biological one.

water my friend we are headed in the wrong direction...lol
Yes we are. I don't feel like arguing lol. I'm tired..

Derailing ftw, but this I can't let go. Lets keep this civil shall we?

it is true science is not conclusive about this topic so neither of us will win. before the common interpretation of race existed it was used to classify different types of the same people just as we do with regional variants of animals. the fact that we use the sociological/ cultural argument, which has some merit in the argument of how the word is perceived today, and apply it only to humans and no other living creatures on this planet bothers me a little.

...... back to the fish.

100 years from now, what would YOU want?????Facilities breeding the flowerhorn?????????OR---->the basic hobbyist breeding an endangered cichlid in his own room/garage...........

In that regards the masses have already spoken, the vast majority of fish in the tropical fish industry are fancy strains of hybridized specimens. Think fancy goldfish, swordtails, platys, guppies, etc. There are billions of these fish circulating in the hobby due to simple supply & demand. There are probably more fancy strains of goldfish kept in captivity than all of the cichlid species combined.

I personally wouldn't lose any sleep over it either way. Keep what you like, breed what you like, just do it in a responsible manner.

maybe he meant his mom was a gorilla and his dad was one sick dude:ROFL:

why not the other way around. i'm upset! that is sexist...:irked:

anyway i say its up to the fish. we have the balls to keep them in captivity... most of the fish commercially available, pet trade or food, are as RD pointed out, hybrids. alot of the "normal" species of fish we eat or keep as pets are in existence due to captive line/ selective breeding, crossbreeding and even genetic manipulation. goldfish is a classic example, most were derived from a form of carp and now look nothing like its original ancestor, guppies, mollys, tetras, catfish, salmon, talapia, trout...the list goes on

Well, that was a big fear of the "purists" when the FH thing really started blowing up in popularity... That pure species of cichlids would disappear in the hobby. That's proven to not be the case at all. Plenty of room in the hobby, neither "pure" species or hybrids are likely going anywhere anytime soon as there is a large dedicated base of each "group." Keep what you like. Like RD noted, keep breeding responsible with hybrids, and keep your labels honest.
