Power outage & cichlid tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just came out of my power loss. I was using an air mattress inflator and a water bottle with holes cut in the bottom to bubble my tanka nd cause O2/CO2 exchanges. I will say I will be grabbing a generator now after this past weekend. I will not go through that one again...

I'm at 39 hours now and they (PSE&G) are saying Sept 4th before it's back. So I might be finding out first hand, lets hope not.

Ugh...that sucks...I know your pain. Ive lived in "Hurricane Alley" for the last 29 yrs and many times have had to go a week to 3 without power. Its the main reason I quit keeping tanks when I was younger and had moved out of my parents house. This was the first time in what seems to have been at least 5 yrs that we lost power for longer than an hour or two.

Might not be the last though. Weve got T.D. 12 out near Cape Verde forecast to head into the bahamas by Saturday, so who knows whats to come.

Good Luck Tom.

Me too. Ive decided its time to quit chancing it...I just hope I can make it through the rest of the season without one. They are hundreds more now than they will be in December, at least around here.

Price here is about what it will be though there are none around. I need to redo my carpeting so if I buy it from Home Depot then I will throw in a nice large generator and tack it onto the credit card at once to be financed interest free for a couple months

I have a generator powering my fridge two air pumps 1 fx5 and 1 xp3 and that's it projected power to come back on friday or Saturday....maybe lol. I feel your pain

Wow, that sucks. Ours was out for about 14 hours.

Good luck - I would think manual aeration with a cup a couple times a day would be enough to keep them alive. Temp may be a problem unless you have warm water to mix in occasionally. Lows in the upper 50's tonight...

5-6 days with no food or with no power or means for filtration/oxygenation when power is out?

If you mean feeding, you can go weeks without feeding and your fish will be ok.

If you mean the latter, thats good to know that in a worse case scenario it is possible. I was worried going 32 hrs but it was fine.

Sorry, I was speaking about feeding. The longest I've gone with a power outage is around 24 hours.

Going into day 3 no power. Temps in the tanks got down to 73 but they look fine so far this morning before I left for work. Airated the tanks manually and none of them are at the top gasping for air so far so good. I was going to do a water cahnge but we're on a boil advisory so i'm not sure I want to risk it.

Have you tried insulating the glass? I've used blankets in the past to help prevent heat loss. Also have you tried heating some water up before manually aerating? I wouldn't get the water too hot, just be careful to that you don't scald your fish. Good luck!

Good Deal Tom, sounds like theyre doing ok so far.

Id personally hold off from any water changes at this point. If they want it boiled for human consumption, no telling whats in it that could affect the fish.

Good call on insulating the tanks. I didnt realize it was already dropping in the 50s up there...but he has no power so Id think the ability to take tank water and heat it before putting it back in the tank wouldnt be possible.
