Power outage & cichlid tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When I lived with my parents for Floyd we took a big pot and heated water on our grill outside then slowly mixed that hot tank water into water we pulled from the tank during aeration. That way we did not dump a pot of hot water in but instead slowly raised the temp of the tank by mixing it in slowly so as to not shock the fish.

Most people have a grill of some sort and in times like these it really serves multiple purposes...

Daily water changes during extended days without power have worked for me too. I also have three large battery operated aerators. My wife bought them when they were on sale. I thought that she was crazy for doing it but was very thankful when I needed to use them. I'm glad she is not as cheap as I am. Pouring in water from a raised position as suggested earlier also helps to aerate the water. A friend of mine has a large air pump for his tank. It is designed to hold a charge during power failures and will function off a charge for several hours. I guess there is always a need for backups in this hobby. I hope you guys currently dealing with power outages will find some relief soon.

I wraped a couple of comforters around a couple the smaller tanks and the fry tank. I just heard from a friend that has and inverter so I'll be able to run the filters for a few hours from the truck later. I have to pull them apart and clean them out first they have been sitting since Saturday so I would imagin they are pretty ripe. I did unplug all the filters so if the power comes on I don't have to worry about them pumping any toxins into the tanks. The night time temps are dipping into the upper 50's but the days are around 80, the house is holding around 72. I'll boil some water tonight and let it cool enough to safly add to the tanks that should help a little. But like I said everybody is healthy and no damage to the house so I'm counting my blessings it could always be worse. Fish can be replaced if necessary.

Now where the hell is TD12? It's only August!

I've had no power since Saturday around 5:00pm est and fish are doing fine hang in there...I work for dominion power we have 7200 people in VA alone working around the clock to restore power

TD 12 is off the coast of West Africa, still a while off. A lot can happen in a week. So who knows. Hopefully it will weaken or stay over the sea. If it becomes a hurricane it will be called Katia.

I'd be going crazy with no electricity for that long.

Tell me about it my tanks got cold and my beer got warm where's the justice in that!

Power came back last night at 8:30PM. All the fish are looking good as of this morning tanks are warm beer is cold, order is restored.
