Hello all i am looking around at the different geophagus species to do in a 75 and am having trouble telling the difference between these two.

I have seen tapaj 1 called red heads geos yet on cichlid-forum they say they ARE NOT the red head geos.

Then i have seen tapajos 2 called red heads, orange heads and "the harder to get orange heads" :screwy:

Can someone help explain which species ARe the read head/oraange head geophagus? I want to order some but im afraid to order either not knowing FOR SURE which are which.

If anyone has pictures of both species or either for refernce i would greatly appreciate it

Thanks :headbang2

Tapajos I is usually the orange heads, and Tapajos II are usually referred to as "Peach Face" geos.

nemesis when you say "peach face geo" ar you refering to the geos that have the red head and the cheeks with color or another fish?

I hate trying to find pictures of these species as looking up tapajos 1 or 2 brings up the same images!

Hey Vcygnout1 I have 6 about 2 inch Geophagus Tapahos 2 peach face growouts. I have same promblem would like to know the differance if there is a differance. The owner of the shop where I bought them said they look like and he shows me a picture of a geo called a redhead and said I think it will growout to look like this. But I'am not sure he says in the next sentence.

You may be referring to the two variants of orange/red heads that are in the hobby. The more common Rio Tapajos variant has an orange/pink coloration on the face while the Rio Arapiuns variant has a deeper red on its face. The Rio Tapajos is relatively clear compared to the black water of the Rio Arapiuns. This may explain the differences in appearance between these two populations.

The best pic I can find of Tapajos II is from Rapps gallery here.. http://tangledupincichlids.com/images/mega1.jpg. There's still arguments as to whether Megasema and Tapajos II are the same fish. They are called Tapajos II because they are found in the same location as Tapajos I, and are usually imported together in batches labeled as orange or red heads. The only reason I gave you the name Peach Face is because that is what they are usually labeled as, and I figured it might be easier to find them with that name.

This is what I've always heard.

cool thanks for the help everyone I appreciate it.

The ones im looking for appear to be tapajos 1.

What about "orange head arguaia?" Arent they believed just to be tapaj 1 with a made up name?

I don't believe so. They each have their own distinct traits which suggests they are separate populations. This topic has been beat to death so I won't go on about what I think I know. Go on the Cichlid Room Companion forum and use the search function. I believe the debate is still inconclusive but some very experienced folk have weighed in on the subject.
